"Obviously right now the Army is stretched, and we will make every effort possible not to break their dwell time," said a senior Army official, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. "But in this case we had to."

The way our country treats solders and veterans is appalling. I am the adult child of a Vietnam Veteran who served two terms "voluntarily". It is "sad" as a country we have learned so little. It is time we changed. Our country needs to start giving solders/veterans the respect and honor they deserve. They give their lives and sacrifice their families. They deserve our utmost respect.

the soldiers are well aware of what they could be in for when they sign on the dotted line. they no if a war comes there will be unbearable situations. I think the troops deal with this alot better than the media and writers. If the soldier's don't no what is expected of them ,they probly should not have signed up.....

Frankly, I think it is time for the U.S. to institute a manditory 2 years military servece for everyone. And I do mean EVERYONE...no special exemptions for the children of congressmen, the rich, or even the President! Who knows, it might even calm down some of these war-mongers who are all too eager to send others to war.

This is worse than appalling..it is insane!! No person should be sent into war twice. especially with less than a year in between. If the volunteer that is one thing. This is worse than the draft. Obviously the supporters of this insanity have never served in combat or they wouldn't be so eager to send them back to this senseless war of lies and deception. This is worse than VietNam.

What did you expect Regan spent years building a military so it wouldn't streched thin. Then Bill Clinton spent years tearing apart the military and downsizing. Anybody can see why we are downsizing our military still to this day China is building up a huge military.

I think it's time to bring all the troops home to their families rather than making them fight and die for Bush to finish something Daddy didn't do.

Well after reading the typical Conservative Chickenhawk BS it brings to mind a story

Sent the Army recruiters over to my Republican neighbors home. I happened to be watching as they arrived and walked past his display of 50 or so American flags on his lawn and past his Hummer in the drive covered in the little Yellow Ribbon magnets (made in CHina to boot).

When they rang the bell and he answered the scene was priceless. His face turned the whitest shade of white I had ever seen, especially against the camo outfit he wears. The front of the pants turned a very dark. It was a good thing the recruiters were there to catch him before he fainted and fell down the stairs. I'll be stopping over to see him shortly after the ambulances leave.

So Neo_Cons enlist to fight YOUR war, stop making excuses as to why YOU cant fight.

We seem to have learned nothing from Vietnam. We've got ourselves into another quagmire we had no need to enter. This one is even worse, because it has enormously strengthened the Iranians and cemented a Shiia triangle of hate around our ally, Israel. It has also given Osama bin Laden both time and recruits aplenty to regroup and again bring the real war of Islamic terrorism to us.

We should put this into law. No more wars of opportunity unless we first institute a draft with none of the loopholes the chicken hawks like Bush and Cheney used to avoid serving in harms way back in their day.

I was in the Guard during the Viet era and the only active duty we saw was 3 days on the streets of Newark during the Newark riot of the 60's. At that time it was just assumed that a call up to active duty was very unlikely & thats why some of us joined up.

Yes do indeed use fact. Reread THAT oath. Its an oath of allegiance to the country and the Consititution NOT the President and his corporate donors (notice the little part of the Military Code of Justice). So exactly how does invading Iraq and becoming a police force agree with that?

Its amazing. If you read the posts of the right wing on here it becomes pretty clear that the mopst influential AND powerful person in the US has to be Bill CLinton. Here we are over 6 years AFTER he left the Presidency and he seems to be the cause of almost all the bad decisions the US makes today. THe Republicans, despite holding the Presidency and Congress for over 6 years STILL seem unable to correct or stop Clintons programs or initiatives. Pretty amazing.
