Tuberculosis Victim Locked Up »

Behind the county hospital's tall cinderblock walls, a 27-year-old tuberculosis patient sits in a jail cell equipped with a ventilation system that keeps germs from escaping. Robert Daniels has been locked up indefinitely, perhaps for the rest of his life, since last July. But he has not been charged with a crime.

    I was surprised to learn how frequently this happens. Texas alone locked up seventeen such patients last year, and most states seem to have had some cases. But they apparently do not have to be locked up for long--since the disease is incurable in them, they die fairly soon.
