After the birth, Mejia developed an aggressive form of streptococcus that resisted conventional treatment, according to medical records. She went into shock, gangrene set in, her kidneys began to fail and doctors were forced to amputate all four limbs to save her life.

Mejia previously sued to try and force the hospital to surrender information about any other patients with the same type of infection and related medical problems.

The latest lawsuit names the hospital and its parent company, Orlando Regional Healthcare System Inc., as well as two doctors, a nurse and two midwives.

Yeah, providing that she contracted the infection at the hospital and that it was mal-practice. If not, she shouldn't win...just because something this terrible happened doesn't automatically mean that she is entitled to a truck load of money.

very tragic yes, but it does say that the investigation reveals that she did not acquire her infection at the hospital, which is good, too bad tho they couldn't treat her for it...well without cutting off all her limbs! damn that's hideous :-(

The more we eliminate the animals and plants (usually dead) that these bacteria (and flesh-eating fungus) feed on, the more we go into the deepest rain forests and put guys in swamp-slime holes for 48 hours (like my uncle had to do in Nam where he picked up systemic parasites) the more these aggressive little flesh eaters will have to eat US.

These creatures have a natural fuction to break down organic material and return it to the soil, the same way maggots do.

Toe-nail fungus is a another example. People didn't have that much in America until it was brought back by soldiers who had to crawl through the rot for a few years, get covered with various microbes etc., and then come home.

            Yay war.

This type of infection is becoming more of a problem. Hospitals are only one source. For those that go to salons to have their nails done or get a pedicure - beware. They also can be sources of these super infections

I was working in decontamation one time in a hospital (they are lucky I am not naming names!!), and there was a red-bagged item that was the last thing in the room to get to. As I went to pick it up, a nurse burst into the room asking for the bag. When I inquired what was the big deal, she announced that there was a whole bowl of flesh eating bacteria in there.

Although I was garbed up for the occasion, I sure am glad that I didn't open the bag!

our medical facilities are breeding places for many deadly staph germs. while recovering from bad infections in her abdomon after a surgery for a burst appendix, my mum almost died from staph germs she picked up in the hospital.

people are already sick and their immune systems depressed, and in addition they are exposed to less than sanitary hospital rooms. seems they don't bother to disinfect between patients any more.

gross. hope she wins, but nothing will compensate her loss.

Suing over a quadruple amputation? I don't think she has a leg to stand on.

This is disgraceful. I don't care how tragic her sitation may be, she's entitled to nothing. The hopsital simply failed to catch the infection at an earlier stage. Guess what, doctors can't know everything thats going on or be able to run tests on every possible illness or infection. Stupid litigous americans. The hopsital should have let her die; ungrateful wretch.

There was a 3 part series on the Post Gazette about how these hospitals fire doctors (and black list them among other nefarious things)who complain about bad conditions in these hospitals. They called the one that that poor woman got her limbs cut off "Hasta La Vista" Hospital, it had a bad reputation. I sure won't go to them unless I'm dying anyway. And even then, it's cheaper to die at home than at the hospital. I hope she gets millions of dollars for this, it is definitely justified!

Tryingtofindmyway, you just have no clue about hospitals, apparently. Would you like to be in HER condition? I think NOT.

Ruby hospital in Morgantown WV is notorious for people getting staph infections during surgeries, I knew of a guy who got one too (after hearing about it from someone else).

Millions of dollars will still not give her the justice she deserves.

Does anyone realize that some of the problem with these extremely dangerous infections is lack of public knowledge re: misuse of antibacterial drugs and even dependence on antibacterial soaps etc. We, in the general sense, have created the problem faced by these doctors, the hospital and the patient.
