The Monster Republican Tax Hike »

Posted by: gatitabonitasen 2 years, 9 months ago

Following the example set by their Senate brethren last Friday, House Democrats will adopt a budget resolution containing the largest tax increase in U.S. history amid massive national inattention. Bet you didn't know that, eh? The Dems are already pushing through the largest tax increase in US history! And nobody is paying attention! Any

Here are some of the specifics of the proposal:

The 10% Tax Bracket Will Become 15%: More than five million families and individuals who previously owed no taxes will become subject to taxation.

Marriage Penalty Relief Will Be Eliminated: 23 million Americans will owe an average of $466 in additional taxes in 2011

The Child Tax Credit Will Be Cut in Half: 31 million Americans will pay an average of $859 more in taxes in 2011.

So much for the promise the Democrats made to help the middle class!

Lets also not forget the adverse effect this will have on business owners as well. If this tax hike passes or if the democrats take control of the whitehouse, I know that I will be left no choice but to cut back on my staff.. Just means more hardworking Americans with no jobs and no benefits..... go figure..

Ah, I just read TFA. They're trying to blame the Republicans for the Democrats not continuing the tax cuts. Talk about shifting blame.

You can stand there pointing fingers like little children if you really want to, but someone has to pay for your abortion in Iraq. Big Bush(Read my lips, no new taxes) had to raise taxes to pay for Reaganomics.

we have a democrat gov in nystate now and he has just made unequalled increases to schools. and in nystate 3/4 of all education dollars end up in the hands of union contracts. i can only imagine what that number will be now. watch ny's economic breakdown and you will looking into a crystal ball.

Repubs want tax cuts and are willing to pass the deficits on to their children and their children's children. My parent's generation sacrificed so their children's future was better but this generation's not willing to do the same. All the repubs who support this insane Iraq war should be glad to support it and our troops with taxes to help pay for it. I don't relish tax hikes but I'm willing to sacrifice for my country and I don't even support this war. Where is your patriotism? Out waving the flag?

Tax cuts benefit the super-rich far more than everyone else: convincing the rest of the population that it's in their best interests to keep tax cuts in place is genius. The super-rich republicans have convinced the lower-middle-class and the poor that their interests are the same, usually through appeals to emotion and prejudice. Poor under-paid non-union workers have been convinced that their interests are the same as those of big business: again, genius. Pure, unimpeded capitalism isn't a desirable thing, as it leads to massive exploitation (efficient and cost effective) as well as numerous abuses of power (more profitable). People pay attention to the fact that they themselves will be out $20 or $50 a month, and vote against taxes, without realizing that for the super-rich, those numbers would be in the thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or more.

A person would rather see an extra $20 in his own pocket, than an extra $50k for social programs.

I've looked at growth by President...

The upshot... real GDP less change in the national debt per capita grows by quite a bit more under Democratic Presidents than under Republican Presidents.

                          (Data here: http://angrybear.blogspot.com/2007/02/god-punis...

                          Congresses than under Republican Congresses.)

Even Reagan, the best performing Republican, performs worse than every Demcratic administration since 1950 by that measure. And if you decide to ignore the national debt (http://an...">http://angrybear.blogspot.com/2007/02/god-punis... Reagan manages to beat out Carter by a bit, is beat out by Clinton, and is clobbered by JFK/LBJ.

A follow up to my earlier comment... the reason Dems outperform Reps is that the government does things that are necessary for capitalism to function - building infrastructure, maintaining a legal system, ensuring public health is adequate and preventing epidemics. All of these things cost money.

I hope that the voters will begin to pay much more attention to who their congressman are. The real power in our government lies in the congress. Yet, we always are more concerned as to who the president is.

And not only are we likely to get hit with THIS increase in taxes - and YES failing to extend or make permanent an earlier tax cut IS the same exact thing as raising taxes, after all there is no STANDARD tax level - but the Guber of Illinois is trying to raise taxes HERE too. Democrat, naturally. We might just about as well admit it and change all the signs to say "United Socialist States of America" - Gub'mint gets much bigger, taxes get much higher; that's what we'll have.

Go to the post. You'll find links to all the sources I used. Note that the sources were all government sources (GDP and population from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, national debt from the Office of Management and Budget, and CPI from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.)

Most of that data is available quarterly or yearly, however you prefer. (CPI is available monthly.)

If you're too lazy to subtract off debt and want to look at just one series, go to the BEA's NIPA Table 7.1. You'll find Real GDP per capita there. If you do nothing else, graph it and see the difference by administration. Don't take my word for anything. Go to the original data. I provide you with the links to the agencies that are the ultimate source of the data.

A poster already said the obvious, all must pay for Bush's war and the squandering of billions.

We should pay since America voted in this high caliber president who showed Decision making qualities. Or would you pass the buck for your grandchildren.
