Carter also noted that he was barred from visiting Syria last year when he was abroad monitoring the Palestinian elections: "I have known President Bashar al-Assad since he was a college student, and I thought it might be helpful if I went and urged him to support the peace process in the Middle East. But for the only time in my life as a former president, I was ordered by the White House not to go."

Oh ... like the Bush admin is so "against" Syria and doesn't talk to them and will not 'negotiate' with them ... baloney.

After all, the Bush admin let Syria torture quite a few 'detainees' via RENDITION, including Arar, the Canadian citizen that was unjustly 'detained' by the CIA and then tortured.

Funny how Syria is such an integral part of the "axis of evil" according to Bush, yet we let Syria torture our prisoners ... sniff, sniff ... smells of HYPOCRISY ...
