April 6, 2007, 1:49 a.m.This seems to happen every so often, someone goes crazy and attacks a painting. It seems such a cry for help since it is a crime that you can't possibly get away with.

April 6, 2007, 8:52 a.m.This is sad. I grew up in Milwaukee and remember this painting. Thanks Aidenag for submitting the link to the painting. I seriously hope he gets therapy or his meds adjusted or on meds or something. I also hope he has to pay restitution. Probation, community service something.

April 6, 2007, 9:30 a.m.It reminds me of those graphic hostage beheading videos. I have a pretty strong stomach and have seen some very grusome deaths first hand but those beheading videos definitly left a mental mark. I cant look at that picture for to long without thinking about the thoughts that must be going through the mind of the hostages. I would rather die a slow death by burning or be eaten alive by wild animals then have to sit there and think that I am about to have my head violantly severed from my body.

April 6, 2007, 9:38 a.m.I'm sorry but I don't have much sympathy for this person. He is just an idiot who has no respect for art that is opposed to his opinions. Really, if this guy was nuts I think he would have lost it long ago with all the more "disturbing" things one can find in today's media/publications/art forms. Plus he purposely waited for the guards to leave the room. He had a clear motive.

April 6, 2007, 10:17 a.m.I don't think uppin' his meds is the answer. It could be the meds he's on already are supressing a normal range of emotion, thereby creating a little bit of back pressure on normal modes of expression. Is it possible this little tirade could have been driven by his inability to emote, possibly due to an attempt at controlling a 'chemical embalance'?
I feel as though there is a lot of media that implies there are 'quick-fix' solutions to our personal demons, and if we continue to employ these fixes, we'll continue to see senseless outbursts of stupidity like this. The brainwash marketing of pharmeceutical companies, whose campaigns debase personal accountability, are a bit more disturbing than a painting of a guy with his head cut off. Not that medicating is always bad...just that it's all too often portrayed as THE solution.

April 6, 2007, 10:41 a.m.It sounds like another attack on Christianity and Juadism. I hope the terrorism laws will take place when he goes to court. I have also seen this painting in Milwaukee. Send him to Gitmo!

April 6, 2007, 10:56 a.m.When I was in Rome I saw some of the greatest Renaissance paintings - arguably the creme de la creme of art masterpieces in all of human history - exhibited in dusty rooms with no lighting or climate controls and "security" guards sleeping on chairs. I never would've believed it if I hadn't seen it myself. I shudder to think that these magnificent works are at the mercy of lunatics. Every so often you hear stories like this one come out of Europe and America.
Oh well ... art is not eternal.

April 6, 2007, 11:25 a.m.Think of it this way, Thank God it was a painting and not a person. If this person was going to break at that very moment better a painting than a person.

April 6, 2007, 11:59 a.m.They forgot to mention that this mental case was wearing a Rush Limbaugh shirt.

April 6, 2007, 12:02 p.m.Rush Limbaugh well therein lies the answer. That would be enough to push anyone over the edge.

April 6, 2007, 3:45 p.m.Maybe he was trying to Kick David between the legs. Eh, anyhow, art doesn't apologise, even to the people who are 'disturbed'.

April 6, 2007, 6:14 p.m.Obviously an art critic.
Or, maybe the violent images made him do it. Maybe he was attacked by a clown who looked like Goliath when he was little. Maybe his mother didn't love him. Maybe he hates when they use tempra paint vs acrylic?

April 6, 2007, 6:27 p.m.At first I figured this was a Mad Christian foisting his religion on the world. Nope, just a crazy dude, I guess.
Actually, much non-Christian art was destroyed by Christians centuries ago. That's why so much of what we see has a Christian theme. That's what is left over.

April 6, 2007, 8:23 p.m.Not necessarily forever. More likely it will be restored, though it will take some time.
The professionals who do art restoration have saved works of art even in worse condition on more than one occasion. They are truly miracle workers of art world.
