The units would serve as replacement forces in the regular unit rotation for the war, and would not be connected to the recent military build-up for security operations in Baghdad . Gates is expected to sign the notices alerting the Guard troops shortly, said the official, who requested anonymity because the information has not yet been released.

"You will start to see reserve component forces coming back into the rotation," said the official, adding that the notices are being done now in order to give the Guard units as much time as possible to prepare.

So without our national guard, doesn't that defeat the purpose of promoting homeland security?

While it is not clear yet which units would be alerted, they would likely include brigades that were among the first to go to Iraq early in the war. Some of those include brigades from North Carolina, Florida, Arkansas and Indiana.

Smaller units and individual troops from the Guard have already returned to Iraq for longer periods, and some active duty units have served multiple tours. A brigade is roughly 3,500 troops.

The troop alerts come as President Bush and Congress wrestle over legislation that would set timelines for troop withdrawals from Iraq. Nearly two months ago, Bush asked for more than $100 billion to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan this year. Congress has approved the money, but the Senate added a provision also calling for most U.S. combat troops to be out of Iraq by March 31, 2008. The House version demands a September 2008 withdrawal. Bush has vowed to veto any legislation that includes such deadlines.

If any good is to come of the disastrous lack of intelligent planning Bush brought to the office of the presidency, it will be a realization that an all volunteer army is not a great idea. It puts national security at risk for two reasons. 1 -- The army may not be able to get enough volunteers. 2 -- The NIMBYs who are now so numerous could care less what their president does with the army. They don't have a dog in the fight.

We should begin serious discussion of a universal national service plan. Service would NOT have to be military. Rebuilding infrastructure and providing assistance to the handicapped and to wounded veterans would also count. We could muster the size of army we need by providing incentives to elect that form of service. But all able-bodied young people should go through basic training. In that way, we would have a vast number of ready reserve if a major confrontation ever came about.

We're stretched thin in Iraq. Imagine fighting China.

we're only stretched thin because we're fighting a PC war. its time to stop worrying about offending people and decimate the opposition. thats what made america, not worry about whether or not we make them feel bad. hookers.

Been twice, invasion in 2003 - 2004, 2005 - 2006 active duty. Now in the guard. I guess this is a situation where the term "third time is a charm" is not welcoming.

Now I am not picking on Bush but with all these surges and inclusions of more troops, I would feel more serene if Bush's daughters or close relatives were included. Then I could rest easy at night knowing this jerk has sacrificed a close relative to prove his idiotic, inane, stupid and self promoting agenda.

HMMace said "Any soldier who has served a tour in Iraq--should not be asked to go back for another...."

No National Guardsman should serve a tour outside our country. The Constitution specifies that Congress has the power only "to provide for calling forth the Militia..." (now called the National Guard)"...to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions."

Since our men in Iraq are not there to execute our laws, suppress insurrections in our states, or repel invasions but to invade, allowing Bush to use them in that unconstitutional manner is an abdication of Congress' responsibility as bad as Bush's violation of the Constitution in kidnapping them to Iraq.

HMMace claims that "...a draft is needed to assure all take part in this war...."

An end in this war is needed to ensure that no one takes part in this war!

All that requires is a return to the specifics called for by the Constitution!

The military is becoming like a credit card company. Just because someone signs on a dotted line does that mean they are required to serve indefinately? Terms can be changed at will.

I heard the military does not even fully pay for college and we all know the government could care less about taking care of anyone who becomes a liability.

I think the government should be worried about getting enough people to sign up for this.

I am sorry, but all this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. There is something going on, more than any of us know. I for one feel that the fall of Saddam was the mark of the beginning of the third war. I know that the guy was bad news, but I think that Bush has turned himself into the new Saddam. Maybe he got bad info. maybe he's just power hungry. none of that matters now. I know how badly we want this war to end, and for our troops to come home safe, but I think that this administration has made that impossible. The people who hate us now won't be changing their minds for a long time.

I heard they're changing the name to "iraqi national guard" since most of them are guarding that nation instead of ours.
