As temperature heads down, gas prices go up »

Gas prices in Fort Wayne topped off at $2.88 a gallon at some stations - more than 20 cents higher than the previous day. Some stations had not yet raised their prices Thursday and were still selling at $2.58 a gallon, according to the AAA Web site.

    Consumers have a number of factors to thank, including steadily increasing crude oil prices, slow-to-react gas station owners, the switch from a winter to summer fuel blend and the conclusion of the Iranian hostage situation with British sailors, said Scot Iamus, executive director of the Indiana Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association.

    Crude oil prices have increased from about $50 a barrel at the beginning of the year to $64 this week, said Nicole Niemi, spokeswoman for AAA Chicago.
