Professor ends up on no fly list for criticizing Bush abuse of power »

Posted by: nakedtruth 2 years, 7 months ago

One of the most persistent claims you hear from apologists of the current runaway administration is that "civil liberties haven't been diminished. But what about a professor and former marine who finds himself on the infamous "no fly" list for, of all things, criticizing the Bush administration's abuse of power? Well it happened.

OMG! How do you check to see if you are on the list? I am well publicized as a Bush hater! And yes, I am a professor too!

And the machinery of the nascent police state did slowly entrap all who dare oppose.

The US transition from the preserve of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to its current condition reminds me of the last lines of Animal Farm.

"No question, now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."

So much for civil liberties, eh?

The terrorists have won. We are now no better than Saudi Arabia.

          Oppress women? Check.

          Restrict movements of dissidents? Check.

Use religion to control the masses? Check.

Possess holy sites? Hmmm, does Disneyland and Disney World count? If so, check.

Fund terrorists to represent our values? Double Check.

          What am I missing?

They will attack anyone who disagrees with this administration. This started shortly before 9/11. A conspiracy by it's nature is very difficult to prove. First, here's a tactic that they really use. Always get your story out so you can control it. Then they create the "wild" conspiracy that can be easily debunked. That way it will be very hard to convince the public of any conspiracy afterwards. The truth may be lack of action with 9/11 and knowing a little about islamic terrorists beforehand.

Now here's something to think about. Solve things in reverse. The 9/11 Commission report found we knew about credible threats, but failed to act. That is the smoking gun.

How would you convince Americans to give up their Constitutional rights to privacy and civil liberties as provided in the 4th Amendment and Bill of Rights? There's no way Congress or the Senate would ever pass laws to abridge these basic rights.

Maybe, just maybe, this will get some of the rabid right to finally understand what all this stuff about protecting our liberties, defending the Constitution, all that stuff is really about.

Maybe if someone like KingofTruth was denied permission to board a plane because some ticket agent decided that KingofTruth was similar to KlingonTooth, a terrorist who is on the list, he'd understand. And if it so happened that someone in Homeland Security made the same mistake and arrested him and tossed him in prison without notifying his family, or letting him get a lawyer, or letting him know what he was even charged with, maybe he'd understand why a lot of people are raising such a ruckus about Padilla and even those at Gitmo. And even when the mistake is sorted out, he's still been suspected of being a terrorist, so he could get rearrested all over again.

              Nah........

There's possibly more to this. Why would someone want to abridge these rights? Maybe, because it was going to come out that the NSA was spying on Americans. By legalizing it no one loses their job or goes to jail now. The President affirms we need this to "fight the terrorists." They already were caught and admitted it was going on before 9/11, but have never come clean as to the extent. They went after the press for letting this information out- but it could have been an intentional leak so they could work on making it legal.

Oh, the war was for getting rid of a ruthless dictator and making some money in the process. Instead of finding Bin Laden we go after an old enemy. Bin Laden slips through the cracks. Now that makes sense... because we see who gains now. Still hard to prove, since the nature of a conspiracy is to keep from going to jail while you do some pretty bad things.

Bush is inspired by the very word of God who vocally communicates with him. How dare anyone oppose the word of God? Doing so would be almost like opposing the words of Hitler, who also heard God speak to him and did nothing more than implement God's perfect plan.

So far, Hitler's way ahead. He was responsible for somewhere between 50 million and 60 million deaths. Bush is a piker in comparison. But give him time. If he can drag Iran into his Iraq debacle and then touch off a broader Middle East war that goes thermonuclear, there is still time in his remaining 20 months to upstage Hitler in Godliness.

Don't worry Mr. Bush. I have no immediate plans on flying anywhere.

If ,and I say "IF" because he has a only a low-level gov't employee's opinion of why he was on that list, then that is truly deplorable and, obviously, wrong. BUT....

                              1. The TSA people at the airports are generally NOT the upper management and, in fact, have no clue why anyone is on that list.

                              2. The guy's name could have been the same or similar to some other person who really belonged on the list.

                              3. Because we are only told that his speech was "highly critical" we have no idea whether he said something that was truly threatening or not. For example, if he were calling for armed revolution, that would be seditious.

                              4. Especially since he was allowed to board unmolested on his return flight, it might just have been a MISTAKE.

Or...maybe it is the real deal. I would like to know more.

                                THIS is truly SCARY.

                                --------------------

"I presented my credentials from the Marine Corps to a very polite clerk for American Airlines. One of the two people to whom I talked asked a question and offered a frightening comment: "Have you been in any peace marches? We ban a lot of people from flying because of that." I explained that I had not so marched but had, in September, 2006, given a lecture at Princeton, televised and put on the Web, highly critical of George Bush for his many violations of the Constitution. "That'll do it," the man said. "

The clerk should know, after all, what does he have to hide (unlike higher up 'officials')?

Very scary - especially for those who don't take such treatment laying down..

Plenty of people have been abused by corrupt/racist/redneck authority figures for decades but this current situation normalises and potentially rewards that kind of behaviour.

How many people are going to be picked on and abused because they look a bit different, are the wrong colour, dare to express divergent opinions or simply stand up for themselves or their nearest and dearest..

People like me were drawn to the US from stuffy Europe of the 60's just because the taste of American freedom was a pure rush of adrenaline.

So far I have avoided problems travelling recently - perhaps by being so maverick that I'm really hard to label -and had nothing but smiles on a recent trip to NY.

BUT.. I'm also the kind of guy whose instinct is to defend and stand up for someone whose being harrassed - and God forbid it should be my daughter! - and what happens then??
