Einstein & Faith »
Posted by: _kam0_ 2 years, 7 months agoIt may seem logical, in retrospect, that a combination of awe and rebellion made Einstein exceptional as a scientist. But what is less well known is that those two traits also combined to shape his spiritual journey and determine the nature of his faith.

April 12, 2007, 3:32 p.m.Einstein concerned himself with the universe, something most people don't think about much, and concluded that the operation of the universe itself is God--that there is a God, but not a personal God.
I also concern myself a great deal with the universe and with thoughts about God. Einstein and I, apparently, share a developmental disorder, Asperger's Disorder, which predisposed him and predisposes me to think carefully, even obsessively, about things others don't notice. The article doesn't mention Asperger's, but I've read this about Einstein elsewhere. So I'm totally in sympathy with what Einstein himself said about his experiences. I've had similar ones.
However, I've come to the opposite conclusion about God--that there is a personal God. I did not arrive at this conclusion strictly by thought, however, but by having a personal relationship with Him. Einstein could see Him in the orderliness of the universe, but I can talk to Him.

April 12, 2007, 4:57 p.m.Obviously, I disagree. God is always speaking. As Jesus said, God is spirit. "Spirit" (Greek "pneuma") means "wind," "breath" or "voice." God created, and maintains, everything by His Spirit. If He stopped speaking, everything would collapse.
Yes, I can often hear Him speak. But so can you, if you would let yourself listen. In the West, we are socialized by the time we're 5 or 6 to stop listening (or to stop admitting that we hear). How often have you heard adults tell children who told them, excitedly, that God had spoken to them, or that they had seen an angel, etc., to be quiet? "No, it's just your imagination, honey," or something harsher than this?
One advantage my Asperger's gave me was that I missed the point of a lot of this early socialization. At the time my peers were learning that they weren't SUPPOSED to hear, I lacked some of the central nervous system wiring to internalize this social message.

April 13, 2007, 4:27 a.m.As usual, Time has an agenda to advance even if the facts get in the way. Einstein was famously agnostic.

April 13, 2007, 9:53 a.m."Try and penetrate with our limited means the secrets of nature and you will find that, behind all the discernible laws and connections, there remains something subtle, intangible and inexplicable. Veneration for this force beyond anything that we can comprehend is my religion. To that extent I am, in fact, religious."
"I believe in Spinoza's God, who reveals himself in the lawful harmony of all that exists, but not in a God who concerns himself with the fate and the doings of mankind."
Those two quotes sums up my philosophy. The one thing that I do disagree with is Einstein's belief that there is no free will and everything is predestined.

April 13, 2007, 10:18 a.m.Sorry to be harsh- wait a minute, no I'm not.
In my state the Extreme Right preach in their churches that "Jews are Godless creatures born of the union between Satan and Lilith."
What's interesting how the "regular" Christian Neo-conservatives EMBRACE Einstein because of the God quote.
I have been monitoring frequency and amplitude but have not yet been able to determine the configuration of the hate-wave.
And even though the man was a certified genius in some areas doesn't mean he had the whole picture. His reference frame was moving.

April 13, 2007, 10:58 a.m.Well which every way you come down on it as Al said:
"God doesn't play dice"
and crespi not all Christians are Neo-conservative or vice versa. Perhaps you should do some research on the word before throwing it around.

April 13, 2007, 11:28 a.m.I have often thought that perhaps Mr. Einstein was ALMOST autistic. Very nearly an idiot savant, but very high functioning. Other than excellent math skills, and an ability to apply them, he didn't seem too smart. In fact, almost stupid. Many people seem to regard him as very nearly godlike himself. This is, of course, silly. If one had a math question, Albert was the go-to guy. Anything else was simply not his area of expertise. Further, it has become apparent to me (and research seems to bear this out) that the areas of the brain that process math, and the areas that permit a person to believe in an invisible superbeing are quite separate and distinct. One having little or nothing to do with the other. Thus a person can be quite intelligent in one way, and yet horribly confused (I won't use the word "stupid") in others. I suspect that everyone knows someone who can illustrate this. Guess what? You are another one. As am I.

April 13, 2007, 11:47 a.m.I knew that Darwin would get dragged unceremoniously into this debate. But enough ignorant claims that Darwinism points straight to godlessness. That is a claim made strictly by Christians and others threatened by the idea that something other than supernatural forces could create human beings, a tautology of arrogant assumption if there ever was one. Instead, Darwinism explains material processes and makes no claims beyond that. It is the supposition of smaller minds that arrives at the automatic "no God" part of the quotient. This is precisely what Einstein was saying. So cease with the attacks on Darwin, you dopes. And he wasn't the only guy who thought up evolution. Wallace and a few others were arriving or had already arrived at similar conclusions simultaneously. It is irresponsible to twist history and malign science for the sake of propping up small-minded theologies. A god is primarily personal to those who choose that course. The Bible tells you that.
