If Filbinger was a Nazi, then he should not have been so honored with a state funeral, regardless of his career following the war. I agree with Angela Merkel in rebuking her colleague.

I guess rewriting history is common everywhere. Minimizing something so serious opens the door to repeating history.

I don't feel I can make a comment on the logistics of the story, but definately can say I'm glad Angela M rebuked that collegue as well. I only hope it was for the exact reasons as they say, and no other motives. And I'm only saying that because I don't know of any politicians motives that I trust 100%, at least not in America and that's the only comparrison I can make.

I sure will be glad when all the former nazis that committed crimes against humantiy are gone.

Definitely. This story is a little thick with German politics -- the nuances of which most American readers will not grasp. However, suffice it to say, even though the last of the Nazis die, the scourge of their actions will never disappear forever.

If in fact Filbinger was a Nazi opponent, where is the proof? If there is proof then setting the record straight is only fair. However there appears to be information to the contrary.

My question is, what's Ã;ttinger's real agenda? Is he an anti-Semite or just ignorant? At an absolute minimum his comments were insensitive to say something like that without solid proof to back up his statements.

The Germans are really intolerant when it comes to their past. Internationally they want to show their best peaceful face.
