April 13, 2007, 1:37 p.m.OH where to begin?
Too bad we don't have enough poor starving people to eat that food before it went bad.
Or: How the Heck do MRE's go bad??
Canned goods not good enough they need "prepared" meals.
My school lunch program had enough in the pantry to keep going for a few weeks on non-perishables (for about 5,000 people) and could be prepared with nothing more than a pan, some water, and a fire!
Jeez-o-pete!!

April 13, 2007, 1:43 p.m.If only I had the money our idiot government WASTES! I could join the same clubs as Bill and Warren. Hell, I could BUY those clubs.

April 13, 2007, 1:48 p.m.That's what you get when you appoint people who are your cronies but aren't qualified to do the job.

April 13, 2007, 1:50 p.m.FEMA was never anywhere this incompetent until they were made a faction of Homeland Security. Something tragic has happened to them . They were never all that great but never as bad as Katrina proved them to be. As a matter of fact, they were storing truckloads of Ice and other stuff way up here in Maine that was supposed to be for the people in Louisiana and Mississippi. Makes a lot of sense doesn't it. Store it 1500 miles away. Oh well, that's the government for you.

April 13, 2007, 1:51 p.m.Great foresight! Great planning! Great project management! OH GREAT!

April 13, 2007, 1:55 p.m.Is there no end to the incompetence of government officials and the bureaucracy it serves? Presidents and their homeys should not be allowed to seed the government with unqualified and incompetent appointees. There should be some accountability. Shouldn't heads roll for wasting taxpayer's food and money? Oh I forgot, most of Congress would have to be dismissed.

April 13, 2007, 2:04 p.m.Exactly what is it going to take to impeach? The willfull destruction of another conservative "blacklisted" (New Orleans, San Francisco, New York, etc) American city?
1) New Orleans because of the French part, voodoo, and college kids having sex, 2) San Francisco because "the abominations" have "taken over" there, or 3) New York because it is "the W*ore of Babylon."
I watched A LOT of Fundamentalist Christian television where they prayed to God to destroy these cities.
Hmmm. Bush went Fundamentalist instead of taking a twelve step program for his coke and booze, and then laughed on tv how he "didn't watch any coverage for the first three days" of this national disaster.
If he went to a church that wanted N.O destroyed and then intentionally shirked his duty to protect it...is there such a legal thing as "conspiracy to commit depraved indifference"?

April 13, 2007, 2:04 p.m.Lack of storage?I don't know about your home towns, but in mine, there are so many empty factory buildings we could store enough food to make it through famines, like the Egyptians did. What a brilliant strategy.Send all our manufacturing abroad, because face it,America produces very little industrial goods anymore. But look at all the storage capacity we have!Wake up and look around FEMA!Didn't you guys at FEMA hear that loud sucking noise from the Southwest? That was the huge vacuum cleaner emptying all our factories.

April 13, 2007, 2:04 p.m.Put me in charge!!!!!!!!! Dismiss all branches of the government. I promise accountability and complete responsibility. Unlike Saddam, I only need one palace. Unlike most CEO's, I only need one limo. Turn over to me all resources. I vow they will not be wasted. By the way, we won't need any state or local government either. And no income taxes. Only business and property taxes; and far lower than now. Strict environmental compliance. Strict enforcement of the laws, no matter who you are. No appeal system, except to myself and my councils. No more waste, pollution, bad driving, or other BS. Zero tolerance.

April 13, 2007, 2:54 p.m.Yes Adman, it's cronism all over again. Is there no end
to the inefficiency in our government? Why wasn't Pelosi
working on this problem instead of hob-knobing with the
ilk in Syria?

April 13, 2007, 4:07 p.m.This gives me a sour taste in my stomach. How careless, this is a disgrace, and do you work hard for your tax dollars? So they can waste food? When there is money that is needed for other things, that now they will have to spend more money to replace this food. I don't feel comfortable about how our tax dollars are being managed.

UBCONFUSE
April 13, 2007, 4:33 p.m.Idiots as usual. FEMA hires "storm troopers" from the ranks of the "I cannot get a job and I am living at home with Mom". I actually know a person that works there. When we found out the young man was a FEMA supervisor, we almost choked on our food in front of his parents. Even his parents know he is a screw up. Go figure, but they were so proud of him!!

April 13, 2007, 4:34 p.m.Of course, this is typical of the way the federal government has been operated since March 4, 1933 (the date on which Franklin Roosevelt took office). While there were starving people in the cities and countryside of the United States, FDR ordered the destruction of tons and tons of farm products. The idea was to raise the prices that were paid to the farmers. That's right. While people are starving, destroy food and raise the price. Heckuva job, politicans!

April 13, 2007, 5:30 p.m.Yes yes lets do away with any sort of agency that can try and help in a disaster situation, that way instead of complaining about how slow they are, we can complain about how many people died because there was no one to help.

April 13, 2007, 8:27 p.m.FEMA was set up as a check writing agency.
The National Guard is supposed handle emergency services with help from the Military.
In Mississippi (under a Republican gov.) thinks worked out well.
In Lousiana (under a Dem. gov.) things didn't work out as well.
I wonder why?

April 13, 2007, 5:13 p.m.I think that maybe they should start calling it the Federal Emergency Mismanagement Agency. It would be more appropriate.
This is yet another National disgrace. Time for a change in the people calling the shots.

April 13, 2007, 5:22 p.m.Its ironic however, that all the private,(usually "faith based") charity organizatons (except perhaps for the Red Cross) had a nearly 100% accountability for all the resources aquired and distibuted! Perhaps were are too dependant on the Government doing what they are least effective at.

April 13, 2007, 5:56 p.m.Whats really sad is this is the only place that I am hearing people be outraged! Why arent we standing in the streets and demanding impeachment. Why arent we demanding that these people be held accountable because you know the only heads that will roll in all this will be the underlings that didn't stand a chance.

April 13, 2007, 6:02 p.m.How many strikes does Bush have to make before someone throws him out. He is going to be a legend for incompetence and ignorance. But the real amazing part is how he has fooled so many people, or wait, were the Bush supporters just fools to begin with. And please don't say it isn't his fault when things go wrong, he is the PRESIDENT and asked for the job.

April 13, 2007, 6:05 p.m.This is just frustrating. Can those people do ANYTHING right? I'll admit, I screw off at my job sometimes but I'm not responsible for FEEDING THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE!
-

gatitabonitasen
April 13, 2007, 7:39 p.m.we have thousands of people homeless and thousands more of families just barely making it , you think the goverment would be kind enough to pass the food along to the people who need it more? they allow the food to go to waste instead of feeding the needy . This people are bad to the core

WCFIELDS
April 13, 2007, 8:03 p.m.I don't see how these MRE type packs went bad if they were made for tropical climates. I've had chocolate as well as cooked compressed bacon packages made for the tropics that Rosie O'Donnel could haul around in the Southern part of her panties and not spoil. I'd guess this stuff was looted or sold off.
