Chicago tops L.A., to bid for 2016 Games »
Posted by: populist 2 years, 6 months agoNow Chicago takes on the rest of the world. The Windy City's bid to hold a Summer Games for the first time moved to the international stage Saturday when the U.S. Olympic Committee capped a yearlong search for an American candidate for 2016 by picking Chicago over two-time host Los Angeles.

April 15, 2007, 1:14 a.m.Chi-town in the summer.....hot and humid...nice. Doesn't someone die there every year from the heat? The best time of the year in Chicago is the fall.

April 15, 2007, 1:33 a.m.Hey WCFIELDS - we're going to hold the olympics inside your empty cranium since you are lacking a brain !!!
I've not known Chicago to be cold in the summer...windy sometimes - during a thunderstorm, but cold, never !
As far as people dying from the heat and humidity, as jerryskid1 thinks, there are a lot hotter places that have held the olympics, such as Atlanta. Ever been there in summer?
I can't wait for 2016 - this will be fun ! Plus it will be great for not just the city but also all the way up to Milwaukee, south to Springfield and east into Indiana including Indianapolis. Sidetrips into Amish country, into the bayou area of the farthest reaches of southern Illinois, the Indiana Dunes, wonderful Milwaukee with it's great festivals and food. Hmmmm...maybe I can get a job planning these excursions ! :)

April 15, 2007, 7:23 a.m.Seems people think the Olympics may NOT make money for a city any longer
"However, like Chicago, it (LA) won a government funding guarantee of several hundred million dollars if the Olympics lose money."
Not everyone thought holding the games in LA was a good idea
California Assembly voted 65-1 late last month to approve a $250 million state financial guarantee, with the only dissenting vote coming from Assemblyman Todd Spitzer, R-Orange.
"I think it's very hypocritical to represent to the International Olympic Committee that L.A. would be a good site for the Olympics," Spitzer said. "I think it probably would be, but for the fact it's one of the unsafest cities in the nation. It's got an out-of-control gang problem, and the mayor and the police chief are silent on the issue of prison overcrowding."

April 15, 2007, 9:49 a.m.The USOC didn't want the rest of the world to see how bad the Illegal Infiltrator problem has become in LA County.

April 15, 2007, 10:15 a.m.I'd be surprised to see the International Olympic Committee choose Chicago over almost any of those other international cities.
Choosing the U.S. would make a political statement that I can't imagine them wanting to make at this point. My money's on Madrid. (Though I'd like to see an Olympics in Rio.)

April 15, 2007, 1:48 p.m.Honestly, I think Chicago is the front-runner at this point. We're the only city that is already raising funds and has a major committee dedicated to the olympics. Plus, we got some things on our side: We're the only city to ever have the Olympics taken away from us (1904), we are one of the safest cities in regards to major security threats, and we are more diverse than any other city in the running. Add in a very successful Gay Games last year and the extraordinarily active sports culture, and I don't think that there have been many cities that have ever had a stronger bid.

April 15, 2007, 7:08 p.m.I live in New York, so I remember this whole process taking place here through to the very disappointing final announcement. The IOC wants to put the Olympics in a country that has never had them before, not the country that has hosted twice in the past 25 years. And even though Chicago has a solid plan in place, here's their fatal flaw.. the IOC wants a city to host that will leave a legacy of the Olympics (I was recently in Atlanta for the Final Four, theres renmants of the `96 games all over the place). Chicago's Olympic Stadium is planned as a temporary facility that will be turned into an amphitheater after the games. I don't think the IOC will ever go for that.

April 16, 2007, 10:49 a.m.When they hold the olympics in Chicago, they could stuff the visiting athletes full of Lou Malnati pizza, Portillo's I-talian beef sangwiches, some good German sossages, and a couple of cases of Old Style beer.
