Pelosi: a Challenging First 100 Days »

Posted by: STONERS 2 years, 6 months ago

Nancy Pelosi won her biggest victory in her first 100 days as speaker by making peace among her own House Democrats. Mollifying moderates and staving off liberal defections, she narrowly wrung passage of legislation setting a troop withdrawal deadline from Iraq.

Key tests lie ahead when House members return from their April recess in the coming week.

The Iraq troop withdrawal bill faces a veto threat from Bush. Pelosi critics point out that her legislative priorities, such as raising the minimum wage and expanding stem cell research, have not yet become law.

But even opponents concede that Pelosi's kept her agenda, and herself, firmly in the spotlight since her history-making swearing-in Jan. 4.

"I have a great serenity about it because I understand why people have to do what they have to do, both Democrats and Republicans," Pelosi told The Associated Press in an interview as she prepared to mark the 100-day milestone Saturday. "And the challenge is a positive challenge."

You may not like her, but let's face it; she has done what Bush has refused to do, Bush's job.

Re: Pelosi: a Challenging First 100 Days

The key to understanding this hype is to eliminate the words and evaluate the action. The condition of things since the election that gave Democrats a majority is NADA.... nothing is any different.... everything remains 'status quo'.

The least that this Congress can do is to get some 'people friendly' legislation passed (like a windfall tax on oil companies and stopping Big Pharm from TV advertising) even if Bush vetoes it. The subsequent Bush vetoes will provide strong ammunition in the next Presidential election.

Anyhow... so far, nothing is any different than before... there is just more talk and no definitive action. Pelosi should stop 'posing' and start governing.

What is the legislative agenda? The agenda is all about 'later'. The only problem with that is that 'later' never gets 'here'. Intelligent government operates 'in the now'.

The 100 day honeymoon is over.... Ms. Pelosi should get out of bed and get to work.
