Einstein was right: space and time bend »

Ninety years after he expounded his famous theory, a $700m Nasa probe has proved that the universe behaves as he said. Now the race is on to show that the other half of relativity also works

When Einstein wrote his general theory of relativity in 1915, he found a new way to describe gravity. It was not a force, as Sir Isaac Newton had supposed, but a consequence of the distortion of space and time, conceived together in his theory as 'space-time'. Any object distorts the fabric of space-time and the bigger it is, the greater the effect.

It is interesting and easy understanding article. Highly recommended for reading.

One of the things Einstein (and Hawking) have been able to do is describe very difficult concepts in such as way as to allow the unwashed masses like me to achieve some level of understanding of all this stuff.

When we talk about bending space and time it begins to sound like string theory to me.

If an object can bend space, and space and time are linked, does that also mean the object is bending time?

Maybe I'm a closet case science Geek or something but Netscape needs more stories like this and fewer left/right politico stories.

Wow, 1915. We still haven't understood/proven all of his genius. How many more years before we need another genius to bring us even more understanding of the universe?

This article explains in terms that can be grasped by even me. It is described in a 2-dimensional example with fabric as something physical. In reality to really grasp the concept we have to imagine this theory in a 3-dimensional thought with space as something that is void of anything.

Oh why did I read this, my brain hurts now. Thanks a lot "capn caveman".

No its because scientist after his time stopped think out of the box and started accepting his and other early theories as gospel.

What then defines the bounds of the trampoline surface that the article uses to describe the fabric of space time? Is it multi-dimenstional as well? I think this leads to the significance of dark matter which has just been verified by cosmologists this last year. We describe space as being a vacuum, but according to Einstein, it cannot be explained as empty space. Physicists are now looking to the sub-atomic level to try and explain these questions and provide a unified theory that even Einstein was unable to do. How cool would it be to get to name a new demension.....

General Relativity has already been corroborated by the lensing effects of light bending around strong gravitational fields which can be observed in pictures from the Hubble space telescope.

so if earth bends space-time enough to capture the moon in orbit, imagine the effect a black hole has on the fabric of the universe. a black hole can "eat" entire galaxies. like a massive drain, but a drain to where?

and if the universe is expanding, what exactly is it expanding in to? nothingness or something even greater and bigger?

We as a simple race of warlike beings are not evolved enough to know this dangerous knowledge...as you see on some sci-Fi channels and movies have it that we are already having wars in space..... Also it always appears humans are the smartest or win in the end, similiar to present time in some scenarios. If we were faced with other beings from somewhere we will literally crap ourselves silly....so humans are a lower class of space junk floating around in space waiting to be recycled in my opinion and we have a long way to go.

Re: Einstein was right: space and time bend

There is still (it seems) only a difference in semantics between Newton's 'attracting force' and Einstein's "distortion of space and time" as descriptions of gravity.

Unless gravity is not actually an attracting force but only seems to be. Nevertheless, Einstein seems to have expanded the definition of gravity.

The only approach to gravity that makes any sense to me is called "The Displacement Theory of Gravity". The Displacement Theory of Gravity postulates that objects (matter) do not 'occupy' space but rather 'displace space'.

The displacement of space creates the effect that we call gravity.

                                                  See, http://www.templeofsolomon.org/Quantum_Thought....

We still do not know why 'stuff' (e.g. planets) moves in space. I suspect that light is the original source of locomotion.

                                                  Quite fascinating stuff!

Did you ever notice how many things show up in sci fi before they show up in reality? I am not suprised that something I always knew was true has been proven. Call me nuts or whatever but I can see the time space continum and what is called the string theory of everything being conected. We could travel back and forth in time if we knew how because of the way it warps and folds back on itself. I think it is simply a mater of time. I think this explains ghosts, UFOs and other unexplained phenomina. I have seen these things since I was a little girl and I know they are real and wished I had a way to prove what I know. Now I am waiting for the naysayers to attack. Go ahead cause I don't care. I know what I know and God is in his heaven and all is right with the world.
