Imported Food Rarely Inspected »

Posted by: Aidenag 2 years, 8 months ago

Just 1.3 percent of imported fish, vegetables, fruit and other foods are inspected yet those government inspections regularly reveal food unfit for human consumption. Frozen catfish from China, beans from Belgium, baked goods from Canada, India and the Philippines the list of tainted food detained at the border by the FDA stretches on.

    Thanks Aidenag, good article.

    Inspection of all Imported foods are necessary for our own health & safety. The FDA/food safety in the USA last century was started because people were getting sick from contaminated foods & from the unsanitary processes of food.

    (Either every country follows health & safety rules as we have here in the USA, when it comes to food products, or we will not purchase their food products.)

        Thanks you guys for reading it :)

        Pretty disturbing how much food goes through our ports and into our stomachs without even as much as someone looking at it with thier naked eye.

          Go into the produce section of any grocery anywhere in the country and check out the country of origin. You will have to look at several items before you find one that says "Product of USA".

          I live in a heavy ag state, FL, so why are the oranges from Brazil? We have early season strawberries and blueberries so why do we import from Chile? The only US produce I found last week was potatoes from the US NW.

          Food is not the only uninspected ag crop. Most fresh flowers come from So America or the Caribbean. Flown in fresh every day. Cigars from the Dom Rep. Coffee from several places.

          You should see the planes landing every day in Miami loaded with all kinds of stuff from down south. Legal stuff and probably a bunch of contraband too.

            If we can't control contaminated foods from overseas and of course here in the US then we all are doomed. If we don't have enough inspectors then we should outsource them like we seem to be doing with everything else in this country. I know thats not an answer but heck. Next thing you know we will have to import bottled water which by the way we do and is that inspected as well???.

              Unfortunately, if you look in your local supermarket,most fish, veggies, etc. come from China or other foreign countries. we need the inspections, but more than that we have to supoprt our country otherwise we are finished

                That revelation was VERY scary for our pets, now I bet most people would not even think for 1 second that for human consuption, all foods imported weren't inspected.I guess I stupidly thought they were. God! how little we know!!! thanks for posting Aidenag.

                        The FDA concedes that its inspection programs have not keep pace with the need.

                        Food imports to the U.S. have doubled to 2.2 million shipments a year in the past five years, while FDA inspections have been cut in half because of budget cutbacks. Thirty-eight percent of fruits and 12 percent of vegetables in U.S. markets come from other countries.

                        One of the largest recent disease outbreaks associated with tainted produce involved the parasite cyclospora, which sickened an estimated 1,400 Americans who ate Guatemalan raspberries last spring.

                        The government says that other pathogens linked to outbreaks in fresh produce include:

                        * E. coli: unpasteurized apple juice and apple cider, lettuce, alfalfa sprouts.

                        * Hepatitis A: Lettuce, raspberries, strawberries, tomatoes.

                        * Salmonella: Tomatoes, sprouts, watermelon, cantaloupe.

                        * Cyclospora: Berries, lettuce, basil.

                        * Cholera: Coconut milk.

                            We all have to be vigilant and just be aware and not eat that ever so tasty junk and other goodies that have misguided nutrition labels on. If you buy from local farmers markets usually from June to Oct you can supply yourself with fruits and veggies that you know where they came from, and you'll support our farmers.Or do as I do in summer, grow your own garden.

                              During ******ons yrs I remember grocerys stores sold AMERICA CATFISH = AMERICA WATERMELLON ECT! I invented a hollow fiber back in 1982 for land irragations for any type of plants to be growen in any type of soil or from coral rock to desert land sand/only 2 gals of h20 in a 24 hr period per ac.tripling the yield of corn per plant.The US goverment shut my operations down shipping to third world countrys. only was allowed to sell to US farmers or res 60ft h/f bundles. It would have solved world hunger!But goverment stopped it cold from happeing! My hollow fiber is in the Land at ebcot center!

                              The Cost of food tripled since bush took office due to CAFTA cost of food transportation from the otherside of the world!!

                              "This is all Falls on Bush and thoses that have No buiness in office! :!
