April 16, 2007, 1:18 p.m.This is senseless and tragic.
And the worst of it is it need not have happened, if we simply had stricter gun control laws.
My heart goes out to the families of the victims. I read that at least one of the suspects was shot and killed (I've heard conflicting reports on the number of suspects), which is too bad because now he will never face justice. Having him sent to prison for the rest of his life seems to me to be a much more fitting punishment for killing this many innocent people.

April 16, 2007, 1:24 p.m.such a tragedy that will affect so many families.
Killing him or sending him to prison would have been too good for him. I think maybe tying him up in some sand and having a colony of army ants do him in would have been more appropriate.

April 16, 2007, 1:27 p.m.We don't need less guns. We need more guns.
Someone could have returned fire on this piece of crap before nearly half a dozen were killed.

April 16, 2007, 1:28 p.m.WASHINGTON (Reuters) It was one of the worst shootings on a university campus in the United States since Charles Whitman went to top of the tower in the middle of the University of Texas campus in Austin, Texas, on August 1, 1966, and opened fire on people 27 stories below. He killed 15 people, including his mother and wife the night before, and wounded 31 others.

April 16, 2007, 1:32 p.m.How shocking and tragic. My thoughts are with the parents, friends, and family of the victims. I can't imagine the pain they are going through. It is very hard for a community to deal with this type of loss as well. My local area (Lancaster, PA) had to deal with the Amish shootings 6 months ago. May the students and the local community pull together and find the strength to get through this.

April 16, 2007, 1:56 p.m.I was thinking the same thing. What was everyone doing after they heard the first couple of shots? Standing around? Running around? Maybe he was shooting people at close range rather than firing off a bunch of shots. Im anxious to hear more details.

April 16, 2007, 1:38 p.m.Please note the last massacre like this was Charles Whitman at the University of Texas. Red States and their culture of death are fine pointing their hunting rifles at looters and terrorists but what happens when the rifle is in the hands of a bad guy? They have nothing to say. We all need to grieve after a day like this...

April 16, 2007, 1:38 p.m.Sadly I doubt that gun control would have prevented this. I suspect, however, that we will find that some sort of mental health intervention might have.
I don't know that a civilian could have stopped him by returning fire ...

April 16, 2007, 2:04 p.m.This sounds like Columbine high school murders all over again.
America is increasingly becoming violent, where people care less about the value of life and will not bath an eye lash before wasting an innocent life.
Everyday both children and adults are programmed by anti-social violent movies, TV shows, and video games.
Sooner or later these violence which have been sublimated into the unconscious mind explodes like a time bomb and innocent lives are destroyed. The wind of political and cultural revolution is blowing.

April 16, 2007, 2:05 p.m.This is more than a shame. What we need is armed teachers and possibly parents walking the areas regularly. This has worked in Israel, and would work here if we tried it. We certainly don't need a panic cry to eliminate firearms. What we need is common sense. Again, I extend sympathy to the many families involved in this tragedy.

April 16, 2007, 2:09 p.m.That;s right! NO gun control. More guns needed. In fact let's arm everyone with fully auto weapons. Then if we suspect that anything is going wrong we all just start shooting anyone we suspect, or that we don't like or that we don't know. Yea then we will all be safe and secure!

April 16, 2007, 2:25 p.m.You people who think that controling guns like removing it from the citizen who abides by the law will make you safer.
So what are you going to do with all of the weapons out there that I could kill you with, without ever firing a bullet? I could easily kill you with a #2 pencil. Are you going to ban that next?
So you ban my guns. And someone breaks into my house, you think I need a gun to protect myself? Hmmmm my dark house, I know where my Staves, my Swords, my other blades or pounding weapons are. You don't, who do you think is going to wind up being bashed in the head or chopped into little bitty pieces?
In other words folks, if you ban the gun do you really think that people wont find other means to create a fiasco like this? If you really think that if the gun was not around in this case. He would have used a home made bomb or something like that. There will always be other means to kill if you take away the guns. Does not stop the intent of the one who is killing.

April 16, 2007, 2:35 p.m.Gun control isn't an answer. Criminals get guns easier on the streetcorners than honest law abiding individuals can at a gunstore or Wal-Mart. I've hunted all my life - but would only use a gun on another human being if my life were in danger. I've studied Karate for years - but I don't go Chuck Norris on people either.
The people behind this had some sort of psychological impairment - temporary, permanent, congenital or situational - whatever in order to enact this horrific event.
What can be done to prevent this from happening? Better mental health care and quick access to treatment. Better communication between individuals and groups - not solitude.
My prayers and thoughts are with the families of those involved. I can't imagine their suffering and sorrow.

April 16, 2007, 2:44 p.m.The right to own guns and "gun control" are not at really odds - are they? Rosie & forks -- come on -- that's arguing not discussing.
Control means regulating the use. This might be locking the barn door after .... but what is the valid purpose of having a automatic weapon on campus?
In your house to protect your family -- fine.
Yes, I blame the shooter, not the weapon -- but since there are apparently unstable or evil people out there -- at a minimum we have two choices (1) restrict their right to own guns (a slippery slope that may lead to an outright ban.) or (2) have gun-free locales -- like schools, hospitals, arenas, stadiums .... Bring a weapon to school -- go to jail!!!

April 16, 2007, 2:57 p.m.I don't have the answer -- and I really feel ambivalent.
I certainly for the victims and their families.
As a retired O-6 who's 60 something years old, I'm kidding myself re: hand-to-hand against some 20 year old punk whose got size on me -- 35 years ago I would eat his lunch regardless of size. So maybe I feel more comfortable with an "equalizer" in my shoulder holster. It makes ME the decision maker -- not the other guy. I can choose to end the violence -- I can choose to avoid the violence. BUT I MAKE THE CHOICE, not the other guy.
Nonetheless, it's clear that it's too easy to get guns and there are too many floating around.
Extreme solutions don't work -- both the NRA and the tree-huggers are wrong. But they've got too much political stake in their positions to try to discuss reasonably and reach a workable solution.
