April 18, 2007, 10:26 a.m.With the new smaller cars coming (Smart etc), more flex fuel vehicles and diesel hybrids etc, there are a lot more conventional mileage alternative vehicles, that's one reason Honda is getting out of hybrids and focusing on diesel.

April 18, 2007, 1:28 p.m.Since the hybids do not use as much gasoline and is a loss in gasoline/tax revenue. There are some states that are charging the owners of the hybrids, so much money per mileage, to make up the states tax revenue losses in sales of gasoline.
The hybrids are too expensive and resale or trade in values are lower than other vehicles.

April 18, 2007, 3:37 p.m.One little known fact is that the batteries used in some of the Hybrid cars contain chemicals that are only a couple of notches down the scale from nucular waste in their long term enviromentle effcets, or HAZMAT issues.
This is part of the reason why the batteries cost so much to replace, it's the cost of disposal!
The hybird idea is fastnating. and has merit, but the basic laws of science (there is no such thing as free energy) will keep it less than efficiant for some time to come.
The best thing is to keep the trunk empty and the speed down.

April 18, 2007, 6:50 p.m.I rented a Prius while on vacation, drove for a week on just one tank of gas. Performance was good and it's great in traffic (uses battery only). However, didn,t feel very safe with all the SUVs surrounding me.

June 3, 2007, 5:51 p.m.Hybrids are not ready for prime time. Ford and Chrysler market diesels in Europe. Both are failing corporations. Why can't they market their diesels in the U.S.? They are high mileage, comfortable, and have a share in the Euro auto market. What's wrong with this picture.
