Self-Defense in Switzerland »
Posted by: populist 2 years, 8 months agoSwitzerland has year after year turned in one of the world's lowest murder rates even while sending machine guns to every home of every member of their citizen army. And they do not keep their machine guns in safes or encumbered with trigger locks. They keep them at the ready.

April 17, 2007, 2:24 p.m.Well if more citizen's do have guns in every nook and cranny of every home, then how do "experts" surmise that crime will be elevated? That's illogical!I would think if anything, it would be a deterrent! If I were a perp in that country. I would'nt even think of breaking into somebody's house and cause mayhem.

April 18, 2007, 11:41 a.m.and that's national defense! Here in the U.S., the government has spent trillions and trillions on national offense instead..

April 18, 2007, 11:43 a.m.The Swiss--they rock. ya know why??? Because they dont take any crap from anyone. One good friend of mine is Swiss and the way he puts it is: they are an armed society hence, the low murder rates.
Now, Lets look at Chicago IL. Want to live there anybody??? No, why? Because of their wonderfully high crime rate. And yeah; owning a gun in Chicago IS illegal!

April 18, 2007, 12:14 p.m.The reason crime rates are so low in Switzerland is pretty simple. People are less likely to attempt to victimize someone if there is a 100% chance the victim is packing.

April 18, 2007, 12:43 p.m.At the risk of getting flamed: as an idealistic position I would love to see a society without guns. As a practical matter, it simply can't be done. So I have to agree with most of the posts here, that criminals are much less likely to cause or get away with violence in a society that's packing.
But I would like to see the U.S. culture shift much more toward responsible ownership and less glamorization of violence and the gangsta and vigilante lifestyles.
BTW the person who owns the most guns of anyone I know owns them all legally and is also the best and most responsible firearms owner and handler I know. That and Switzerland prove to me that it is possible to have an armed society that is not stupid or unnecessarily violent.

April 18, 2007, 12:47 p.m.How do you explain places like Japan or Australia? i.e Where I live and where I'm from. It's virtually impossible to own or obtain a gun in these countries and they both enjoy some of the lowest gun crime in the world. Why do you need to own a weapon? Does it make you feel tough?

April 18, 2007, 12:49 p.m.As an X cop I can tell you that the police can only write the report after the fact. If all the good guys were armed the bad guys would be good or go to boot hill. If the nut at VA TECH had had to face 100's of armed good guys he would have been taken out in short order with a much less toll of the good guys. Too often today the police forget they are to protect and serve, the people, not them selfs

April 18, 2007, 1:28 p.m.It may be an illogical concept to grasp that if gun controls are imposed that crime rates INCREASE- but who are we to argue with the stats? It can make sense if you look at it from a criminal point of view. The crims will begin to illegally import, and then turf and territorial wars begin to climax because the crims are all clammering for their customer's cash...makes sense.

April 18, 2007, 1:34 p.m.Here is a story about how the state of Virginia tried to ease campus restrictions on gun control and Virginia Tech's response to that initiative. I wonder if the initiative will be reintroduced now?

April 18, 2007, 2 p.m.If you make it illegal to have a gun, then only criminals would have them. Banning gun ownership is a notion that has more holes in it than, well, a type of cheese from a certain country.
But at least now you know how the cheese got all them holes in it - target practice.

April 18, 2007, 3:56 p.m.As an FFL holder I have seen many good comments here; but at times people tend to forget the true context of the arguement. Most of the issue comes down to cultural mores. It is true that both Japan and Norway have low crime rates; one has a very restrictive gun control laws and one does not... however in both cultures there is no glorification in violence. Tony Blair recently made a profound statement about the crime problem in the UK mostly being a black problem... the same could be said of the USA as most crimes are committed by brown youth; though it is not PC to say. While I collect firearms , I have never shot anyone , and hope that I never have too. The following stats are from the UN and most would find them interesting... if willing to read them.
