Has daylight saving time fuelled gasoline consumption? »
Posted by: STONERS 2 years, 8 months agoThe U.S. government's plan to save energy by advancing daylight saving time -- and the copycat action by Canada -- appears to have driven up gasoline consumption as motorists took advantage of the evening daylight to hit the road, a Calgary energy analyst says.

STONERS
April 18, 2007, 11:34 a.m."The goal of the daylight policy was to curtail 10,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day of energy demand, not guzzle multiples more," he said.
He conceded there is no hard evidence that the surge in gasoline demand was directly attributable to more after-work daylight, but he noted that pump prices were actually rising at the time.

April 19, 2007, 8 a.m.The "law of unintended consequences" at work again?? I've often said that politicians NEVER seem to think through the possible consequences of their actions. They pass legislation and rarely go back to actually evaluate the effects

April 19, 2007, 10:35 a.m.Your tax dollars at work!!!
What a STUPID idea. Is that really the best they can come up with? ...or was it just an easy "fix" that required no money actually be spent on energy conservation.
As an IT administrator, I saw this as nothing more than a huge pain in the ass.
The idea that this will show an impact over several years is laughable. Population growth and energy consumption are increasing daily.

April 19, 2007, 10:37 a.m.Yes, daylight saving time has increased gasoline consumption. When the government gets involved in trying
to make things better.....lock the door and turn off the
lights.

April 19, 2007, 11:23 a.m.This almost makes sense. a natural result of politicians trying to do what is best left to engineering proffessionals. Then again the special interest groups were screaming at our govenrment to do something, so it did!

April 19, 2007, 11:46 a.m.I always have trouble adjusting to the time change; I don't think it''s physiologically good for a lot of people. And I don't think getting up in the dark saves energy.
Fuel economy is a whole other question; there is a practical minimum as to the energy it takes to move a certain mass, and requiring more turckloads or more cars or more trips in smaller vehicles doesn't accomplish anything useful, not to mention the hazard of being out on the road in a small vehicle. So far, most alternate fuels--alcohol, hydrogen, whatever, take as much or more energy to produce than they have available when they are used. There is a lot of talk out there that is based on bad science and illogic.
