sounds kind of like MTBE. How about we actually RESEARCH the effects of the next "new best thing" before we all just blindly jump on the bandwagon?

How did this story sneak into Netscape?

I thought ethanol was the answer to all of our gas guzzling prayers.

        Amazed,

You are right on about MTBE. Don't you love it?

I see ethanol as a small piece of the solution. Energy independence will require the cumulative effect of many different fuel sources plus the most important part: behaviour change.

My neighbor has a 6000 pound/10mpg Excursion. She has two kids and she uses the truck to bob around town. She is not going to change, period. Unless gas goes to $5/gallon.

Hopefully we can get behaviour change so gas doesn't have to get to $5/gal. I would rather change by choice than by necessity.

Scientists at Environment Canada studied four vehicles of recent makes, testing their emissions in a range for driving conditions and temperatures.

"Looking at tailpipe emissions, from a greenhouse gas perspective, there really isn't much difference between ethanol and gasoline," said Greg Rideout, head of Environment Canada's toxic emissions research.

"Our results seemed to indicate that with today's vehicles, there's not a lot of difference at the tailpipe with greenhouse gas emissions."
