In March 2006 Mega Brands Inc. recalled 3.8 million of the magnetic building sets when one child died and four others were seriously injured after they swallowed the magnets. In total, the CPSC and Mega Brands know of the one death, one aspiration and 27 intestinal injuries. All but one of the cases required emergency surgery.

The expanded recall includes all sets except Magnetix sets sold since March 31, 2006, that are age-labeled "6 " and have the following caution label: "CAUTION: Do not ingest or inhale magnets. Attraction of magnets in the body may cause serious injury and require immediate medical care."

Is magnetix those weird stick together magnet pieces... like the 2nd generation K'nex?

I feel out of the loop. ;P

When I was young I played with Linkin' Logs (some call them Lincoln).

            Me too!!!

I never got a toy that could seperate into tiny pieces, precisely; as Rockman069 so appropriately stated because This is what infants do:explore!!!hearing and touch only go so far, vision ain't up to par yet,so as far as detailed inspection goes TASTE is the sense of choice.

But people never put 2 and 2 together: kid swallows 4 magnets 10 minutes apart.Parent figures "OK, it'll just go on through!" Nope. In the twists and turns of the intestines, the magnets can click together; and since the bowels are in constant motion, this can tear the bowel, causing peritonitis, (Infection of the abdominal cavity) which is deadly if not caught.

Friend of mine damned near lost a kid that way.

I'm glad companies like Mega Brands are taking the right steps to make sure that children are safe. Bravo for them and I sincerly hope that other toy companies likewise will follow suit. Things like these really should be tightly regulated and enforced to the fullest extent. Thanks Stoners for the head's up on this article.

Why are 15 mo olds playing with toys that are identified for 6 YEARS AND OLDER. Do parents think giving a young child toys intended for older children will make them smarter? or do they have one 6 and one 18 months and let them play with the same toy, because its cheaper than buying two? plus, they need to educate their kids before giving them toys. By 6 they should know not to put stuff in their mouth that doesn't taste good and they can eat!! although I can remember putting a bead up my nose (can't remember how old), scared me to pieces, didn't do that again. Aren't kids born with brains anymore?? sorry, I mean PARENTS, we have to hand everything to them and tell them, beware COFFEE - HOT!! Tired of people not supervising their kids, playing with them, and showing them how to use the toys properly, before having an accident and then blaming the manufacturer.

I have some of those magnetic toys, my cats love pulling them apart and rolling the ball around!! lol, they don't eat them.

There is no excuse for the 6-11 year olds, however! No company can take the blame for something an older child does. Warning a parent that there is danger if the toys are not used properly does alert adults to think before they buy if they have a nut of a kid! I can think of some adults (The Wild Boyz) that would swallow magnets just to see what they could get to stick on the outside of their bodies....

What is all this fuss about?

When I was a child I didn't have magnets to swallow, I had dirt and rocks. And I liked it!

I didn't have this fancy, pansy vinyl wallpaper to eat. I had lead paint chips. And I liked it!

I didn't have those soft nerd balls to chew up. I had the real things. And I liked it!

Parents need to look at all of these toys carefully. What I've been seeing - most are made in China

The popular Polly Pocket dolls and accessories also had problem - pieces of the set obtain their magnetic power from the small but powerful NIB magnet produced in China from a composite of Neodymium, Iron and Boron. The models which should immediately be taken away from children .

"American Girl" jewellery and "Made in China" written on the front. Although there have been no incidents reported of lead poisoning, American Girl is recalling the jewellery due to high levels of lead present in the items.
