Reid Offers Bleak Assessment of Iraq War »
Posted by: STONERS 2 years, 7 months agoSenate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday the war in Iraq is "lost," triggering an angry backlash by Republicans, who said the top Democrat had turned his back on the troops. The bleak assessment - the most pointed yet from Reid - came as the House voted 215-199 to uphold legislation ordering troops out of Iraq next year.

April 20, 2007, 9:28 a.m.Republicans seem to hate it when anyone dares to speak truth about the mess in Iraq. The question we should be asking ourselves is why should we waste more lives of our soldiers in an effort that has clearly failed.

April 20, 2007, 9:48 a.m.Dear Samsara15, That sounded like it was right out of the Democratic hand book, how cheesey.
I'll answer your question anyway, how about the reason why we should stay the course is because the 3M people who lost their lives already would be invain.
How about that???

April 20, 2007, 9:50 a.m.If Reid is so sure the war is lost, why doesn't he call for an immediate recall of the troops? Why wait a year?

April 20, 2007, 9:51 a.m.I am no fan of Reid. Yet he threw reality into the face of Republicans and they of course react like a bunch of wet hornets. What is the difference between saying the war is "lost" and saying "there is no military solution" as senior military commanders in Iraq have already stated? Are they also guilty of undermining morale?
I blame this all on Cheney and his cabal. They have brought a new level of denial of reality to Washington. We are now working on projects to physically separate Sunni's and Shias within neighborhoods. How the hell did we ever get involved in such ventures? When did this become our reponsibility? We aren't fighting a war. We are nation building and failing miserably at that task. We are the worst sort of co-dependents for the Iraqi's.

April 20, 2007, 9:56 a.m.Interesting that Reid says "the war in Iraq is lost" and that "the surge is not accomplishing anything as indicated by exteme violence in Iraq yesterday."
It is sad that our soldiers have to read this BS and then are expected to go out and protect Reid's a** as well as yours and mine. The war was won some time ago and we are entangled in a civil disturbance aggitated by infiltrating extemist who are intent on fighting the 'West' wherever they can find them. I would rather fight them on thier soils, not ours. This 'fight' is going to happen whether we leave Iraq in a mess or not. This cannot be disputed. I do agree that getting the seperate Iraqi 'factions' together is a must, but do realize that there are undermining forces at work willing to do whatever they have to do to crush the peace effort. Are we to do the fighting on 'Main Street USA'?

April 20, 2007, 10:06 a.m.Democrats want this country to become the "Land of the victims and the home of the cowards". Both parties seem to fight any real positive advancement by the opposing party, because the fear the other party will succed

April 20, 2007, 10:10 a.m.I never thought that war was a good idea, but that is unbelievable. Can current administration work something out and not show the entire world how divided we are? One party is screaming war to the end and throw more troops in the fire, the other part saying we lost... Meanwhile the troops are being shipped right in the middle of it. Disgusting, both of the parties act disgraceful.

April 20, 2007, 10:11 a.m.Reid is correct! No one has brought these warring factions together in thousands of years of conflict. Do we really think we are going to succeed where there is no will???

April 20, 2007, 10:15 a.m.To those who are slamming Ried, I assume you think we are winning. Even the administration isn't using that tack anymore. If you really care about supporting the troops in this lost cause, then do something other than put a decal on the back of your car. I would like to know where you think we are achieving success over there. If you believe the surge is working , how long should we keep it going 2,3 10 years?

April 20, 2007, 10:20 a.m."...the top Democrat had turned his back on the troops."
I think the troops want to hear how the "war"/Social Work action is going. They are smart. They are putting their lives on the line. I don't think they need to hear only one liners once written by the likes of George Bush, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan etc.

April 20, 2007, 10:24 a.m.I do wish that someone had stood up during the Viet Nam War when the death toll was at 3,000. Remember, the Boys in D.C. will let the death toll climb into the 50 thousands simply for political reasons.

April 20, 2007, 10:28 a.m.Harry Reid Bashing Our Efforts In Our War Against Terrorism
You aren't surprised that Harry Reid once again declared the war was over, that it cannot be won, are you? I have been quoting him saying that so often, I sound like a parrot.
Commie Reid met with president Bush yesterday. After the meeting, he said he told GW the war was over. But he lied! He told GW nothing of the sort. He got caught in another lie. He said it to the press after the meeting. Is their anything unusual about Reid lying? Of course not. He is infected with the mental dysfunction of narcissism.
What worries me very much, is the support Narcie Reid is giving al Qaeda and their jihad. I am wondering how many more American heroes will die because of words spoken by jihad Reid, jihad Nancy, jihad Hitlery, and the rest of the jihad Dirty Dozen. Every death of an American soldier from this day forward, can be directly blamed on the above named jihadists.

April 20, 2007, 10:37 a.m.The Iraq war is still winnable, just not by us. It is now a civil war. Sooner or later, one side or the other will win it. But we can't win someone else's war.
Our efforts should be redirected where they will do some good. We can work with Iraq's neighbors (all of them) to see that the fighting in Iraq remains contained there, and does not spill over into a regional conflict. We can do this diplomatically and if necessary through military support. It's not in anyone's best interest to let this expand into an all-out regional conflict.
We also need to focus real military attention on the fight against Islamic fundamentalist terrorism. Staying in Iraq as an occupying force while trying to referee their civil war is just like pouring gasoline on a fire. We're making things much, much worse.

April 20, 2007, 11:12 a.m.The United States is dedicated to the concept that problems of public policy need to be discussed.
The fact that people are taking Reid's comment seriously, rather than just laughing it off as a silly comment, indicates the magintude of the Iraq situation as a major problem of public policy.
The Bush administration has done all that it can to resist a discussion of the Iraq situation and possible solutions to the problems that we are facing there. Such a discussion is long over due.
It is a shame that Reid's critics choose to call for his silence rather than refute his premis.
To call for Reid's silence on this matter of major public policy is unAmerican.

April 20, 2007, 11:19 a.m.If anyone has turned their backs on the troops it's our President. To attack Iraq for his personal grudge, and cook the books to support it. They never had the WMD, and they were never harboring any terrorists. Was Saddam a terrible man? Sure, but hey there are worse out there. We attacked a Country and were lied to. Why do you think the Dems were voted in? This administration has been nothing but lies and corruption, and if you can't see that you're in denial. The Dems WANT to get us out of there, and yet Bush once again ignores everyone and threatens to veto...why? It's been said time and time again, there is no military solution anymore, and now after watching the news, recent polls show more than 80% of Iraq think we should leave. Bush wont listen though, he's never listened to his generals in the begining, to the veteran families, or to the American people. We are in the middle of a Civil war, and it's rediculous. It's a LOST cause. Reid has to tell it like it is.

April 20, 2007, 11:21 a.m.Let's just say we won and come home! We got rid of the WMDs;) SH is dead. So, declare victory already. Let 'em sort it out for themselves. If not, why not?

April 20, 2007, 11:22 a.m.What proof do you have that the President attacked Iraq for personal reasons? and what were those reasons? As far as WMD's, the UN, Germans, French, British, Israeli, American intelligence agencies all believed Hussein had WMD's.
