This would never work here - how would Democrats release made-up stories about the other candidates just before the election?

"Political mud-slinging is a bipartisan issue"

maybe "bi" but it's 70% more on the Republican side. Look at how much dirty tactics happen on each side and it's just not on the same level. When you have a psychotic guy like Rove behind so much of GOP campaigns, laws will be broken.

I have to hand it to the French on this one. They have a good idea. But how do they handle the internet? All you have to do is read Netscape to find the mud slinging on both sides, to say nothing of all the foil hat conspiracy theorist spewing misinformation and hate. If you really want mud, you can always go to moveon.org(?) and I'm sure ther are equally bad sites that espouse right wing propaganda and slander of the lefties.

But can you imagine one day with no politics on the idiot box, what would you be watching?I think it has lots of merit, should maybe spread it over the week-end so families could sit together and talk maybe, nah to boring, keep it the way it is that way you can still accuse each other of doing the same thing like Skeptic vs.kabusug

Wow. This completely goes against how campaigns are run in the US. Brilliant.

The idea of a "day of reflection" is good in theory, but I am trying to visualize how it works.

What do they do if someone campaigns on the day of reflection?

Postpone the election until they get a campaign-free day?

Disqualify the violator from participating in the election?

                  Fine the violator?

I guess French law provides an answer to this question, but I have no idea what it is.

"James Carville, the "Ragin' Cajun" was a saint? He may have been worse than Rove, you just don't hear much about him now since the Democrats lost the White House"

I'm not an "insider" in DC-- thank God-- but I am fairly confident that Rove is up to a lot more BS. Look at all the people around him falling down? All the money coming from K street-- they should name the street after Rove.

I will say, that seeing seeing Carville LITTERALLY IN BED with Bush Senior's campaign master...that is just too weird for reality. Talk about sleeping with the enemy.

I just want to let the nutty liberals know that they are safe on whoever is elected in France. The most conservative candidate in France is far more left than any Democrat in the US ever imagined attainable. France's 35 hour work week is safe and sound. You can't pull the nipple out of the baby's mouth. France will still be run by unions keeping the country on the verge of anarchy. France's confiscatory taxes along with 12% unemployment will keep the Democrats drooling over how to create more poor people for votes. Unfortunately the French infrastructure is shot. No air conditioning in hospitals/nursing homes killed 1500 during the last heat wave. I watched my mother-in-law being hand carried up 3 flights of stairs to see the doctor,no elevators! The French do have fast trains, a giant air-bus plane and a good satellite delivery system. Of course, it's all government run or subsidized and it does give them something to brag about. Liberals take heart all is well in France.
