Saudi moral police 'under attack' »

Saudi Arabia, one of the world's most conservative societies, has seen an increase in attacks by members of the public against its religious police, a newspaper has reported. Al-Watan daily on Saturday published figures that revealed 21 incidents of violence against some of the country's 5,000-member moral police force by citizens in 2006.

    It really was not like that 20 years ago when I lived there as a teenager. Back then Saudi Arabia was still absurdly conservative, but men and women could still share the same shopping space.

    The Matowa as they were called (the local name for the religious police) would mostly ignore foreigners. We were there to make money for Saudi Arabian interests and therefore could be tolerated to a limited extent.
