Considering gas mileage when purchasing a vehicle could save a driver thousands each year, particularly as gas prices edge closer to $3 or more per gallon.

    Gas prices affect which car a person purchases more than whether they buy a car, Peterson added. The Toyota Prius, a hybrid vehicle that gets 60 miles per gallon, becomes increasingly popular when prices surge, as does the Corolla.

      I drive a 1981 Corolla which gets close to about 25 mpg (depending if the wind is helping to push the poor thing). A brand new Corolla gets about 38 mpg. So it has taken almost 20 years to gain 13 more mpg. Kind of sad isn't.
