April 24, 2007, 9:55 a.m.halberstam was in the mold of heroic russian and asian journalists who have braved massive governmental and establishment opposition to tell truth to power, facing torture and/or death. he has been doing it for decades.
now, under this lawless and constitutionally illegitimate regime, he has been silenced. do the math.

April 24, 2007, 10:30 a.m.If more people read "The Best and The Brightest" we would realize how we could fool ourselves into a VietNam, and we would of avoided this new one. If more people read "The Reckoning" GM would not have been passed by Toyota in unit volume today.
He was a great writer and a noble person.

April 24, 2007, 1:24 p.m.I feel terrible for the guy driving him. I can't even imagine what that must be like knowing that you were driving the car that Halberstam was killed in. For his sake I hope it wasn't his fault.

April 25, 2007, 1:40 a.m.Halberstam did a great deal to end the Vietnam War. Rabid Right Wingers still rail against the "Liberal Press" because by telling the truth about an unwindable, stupid war, they brought the slaughter in Vietnam to an end.
Well, whether you tell it or deny it, truth just sits there waiting. Understand it and deal with it, and it is your ally. Deny it and condemn those who speak it, and it will ALWAYS bring you low. No political party or spin master is in control of the truth. It simply is what it is.
Just as Hitler did, you can use the bully pulpit to control what people believe, but it won't have any effect on what is actually true.
David Halberstam spoke truth to power during the Vietnam War. Then, like now, he explained that the "enemy" lives there and we don't. "Someday", he explained, "we will have to leave. They will stay. It's there country." He proved right then and it still applies today.
