Can Aspirin Prevent Cancer? Jury's Out »

Posted by: STONERS 2 years, 8 months ago

The research could give you whiplash: Aspirin prevents cancer, one study says. Oops, maybe not, says another. Now comes word that aspirin may fend off cancer only if people take much more than is used to fight heart disease, suggesting some of the earlier back-and-forth may have been due to confusion over the right dose.

"A general perspective that people have is, 'Why is it so difficult to get a clear answer on a pill that costs a few pennies and is available over-the-counter and taken by millions of people?"'

I view most of these studies with a great deal of skepticism. There a large number of ways to skew a study so that an investigator can get a publication.

The study compares people who take one or more adult aspirin/day for five years or more with those who take less aspirin or no aspirin. They find that there is significantly less cancer in the aspirin takers. Can one conclude that taking this much aspirin is good? Or good enough to outweigh apririn's adverse side effects?

A cynic might ask why people would be taking one or more aspirin/day for five years or more. The data in the article shows that aspirin takers were:

      --significantly older

      --smoked more

--more likely to be over weight

These people may also have other health problems that might predispose them to cancer (i.e. why are they taking this much daily aspirin?) I would guess so, but these were not detailed.

Looks to me like the effects that the authors attribute to aspirin might actually be due to other factors.

If I ingested every single thing that would fight cancer (or any other disease), I would'nt have any time to eat. I just try to be happy and lessen my stress.
