I wonder what would happen if we started looking for life on planets as we don't know it. Isn't it possible there could be life forms out there that are not water based?

I bet soon they'll tell us that day time temperatures vary between 300-561F and nightime temps between -221F -26F and that the only similarity is that 65,201 years ago it had earthlike seas.

                From the article:

"According to the research team, the host star, Gliese 581, is among the 100 closest stars to us, located only 20.5 light-years away in the constellation Libra"

Wow that's pretty close, I hope It can be confirmed by other group or astronomers. But I wouldn't be too optimistic, the article didn't said that they found traces of water within the atmosphere, It could be a hotter and larger version of mars.

OK...how in hell does these people know this planet might have life? What kind of telescope are they using? Even with the Hubble, we can't get that fine of detail!

I'll be the first one beamed aboard the Enterprise to get away from the liberals on Earth!

"Beam me up Scotty. There's only liberals on this planet!"

I agree vidman. It is either twisted to include bush or it is because he/she is a liberal/conservaative. Every subjecdt is not about politics.

If it takes 13 days for it to rotate around the sun, then one day on that planet is gonna have about 312 hours haha. I dunno if i wanna live there !

The Left laughs and makes stupid jokes, showing their ignorance about something while the rest of us are genuinely intrigued by a new scientific discovery. They show that they have no faith in the ability of Mankind to succeed in anything, only belief that we will mess it up, that we are doomed to lose, be failures. The planet has a higher gravity than Earth and although it may be colonizable it will take a lot of adaptation and will cost a lot of lives on the way. We need a planet nearer to Earth-size to colonize. One day an asteroid we cannot stop, a planet-killer, will strike and there will be no more people, unless we establish viable self-supporting colonies in this system or in others. The Left will laugh, but that is a fact.

If there is any life there, it'll be 'stronger' than us because the gravity of that world would be higher than here, so I'm not gonna want to pick a fight with anybody that currently lives there.

As far as shipping Bush & Co there, let's not send our garbage there. Let's try and put our best face forward.

I wonder if this planet has enough of an atmosphere to filter out the ultraviolet/gamma/cosmic radiation that the star produces? Even if it's a red dwarf, it's only about 6-7 million miles away from the planet. Too close for comfort for me

That planet has 5 times the mass of earth. I guess that means that gravity is 5 times stronger. Can you carry 5 times your own weight? I can't.

Another Earth-like planet with an alien dawn

and not very far considering how far we've gone

                                            but Earth is in tatters

                                            so it hardly matters

since we can't even handle the planet we're on!

Maybe it's got creatures who'd consider us dumb

maybe they wouldn't be thrilled if we come

and with a leader so unenlightened

                                              they might even be frightened

and tell us to go back to the place we were from!
