April 25, 2007, 2:29 p.m.This kind of 'I've got mine...but you can't have yours' rhetoric never ceases to amaze me.....
Would these same Black Pastors be arguing in favor of the KKK and the reign of terror they and the government waged upon the African-Americans during the JIM CROW era?
And if the 'cured' homosexuals are happy with their 'choice' who are we to argue....but where do they get off forcing anyone else into their narrow view of the world....we are certianly not forcing them into anything....
Biggotry by any other name would stink as badly!

April 26, 2007, 3:13 a.m.You're obviously not a discriminated-against minority
LOL :-)
Would you like to be? You know, just to see what its really like before you really take that particular position permanently..?

April 27, 2007, 2:45 p.m.What makes a hate crime different is the intent of the perpetrators. Kevin Aviance was a gay man walking out of a club in New York City. A group of 4 young men beat him so severely that he was hospitalized for 2 weeks. While they were beating him, they yelled slurs and made sure that he knew they were beating him solely for being a homosexual. That is a hate crime. That deserves not special punishment, but consideration. The fact that these kids are that violent and stupid as to beat someone simply for being gay should have some impact on their sentencing or conviction.
I have many friends who were victims of the exact same crime in many cities. It is a problem and no less of a problem then when race is involved.

April 25, 2007, 4:09 p.m.We keep trying to appease these gay groups with this kind of crap. There are laws already on the books that protect people from crimes against them. The last time I looked gays were people. Why do we need one that specifically names gays? Redundancy in my book.

April 25, 2007, 6:19 p.m.A crime committed against a person because of their color, ethnicity, or sexuality is a HATE crime. This is why groups like the KKK and the like are treated separately.

April 25, 2007, 6:37 p.m.I'm really sick of this. They would back a book that the white supremacists used to enslave their own people? What utter BS. If gays can't have protection against Hate Crimes, then neither can blacks. last I checked, gays were persecuted LONG before slavery began in the Colonies. Where is the proof that those people were once gay? How do we know they aren't simply claiming they used to be so that they can also claim they "changed" their sexuality? I don't know a signle person who EVER chose to be gay, that's like choosing to be Jewish during WWII, who would want to live a life of persecution?

April 25, 2007, 7:09 p.m.A crime is a crime is a crime regardless who it is committed against. We don't need any more laws that specify the type of person involved.

April 25, 2007, 7:56 p.m.As long as they dont add republicans to that list I'm fine with fags and I dont really mind all the abusive blacks Ive delt with in my life but the only group I hold absolute intolerance for is the republican party and the unnatural aristocracy they uphold, ironic that Im jewish and feel that way about the rich , eh?

April 25, 2007, 7:58 p.m.I guess it's real easy for "ex-gays" to be against the hate crime bill, after all, nobody's going to beat them up or kill them for being straight!
I'm sorry, living a lie is not a solution for everyone. I've seen my share of hate crimes, and trust me, it most certainly deserves its own classification.
Nobody hurls boulders over the walls of straight bars. Nobody beats up or murders a straight couple for making out in public.

April 25, 2007, 9:46 p.m.You'd think, with all the hatred, with all the disgust, with all the bigotry and assumptions and insults directed towards homosexuals, if a person could indeed choose to be attracted to the "appropriate sex," it'd happen. People don't freak out when two heterosexuals tongue wrestle on a park bench, but if two men engage in a light peck on the lips, people fall over in apoplectic shock. A bunch of drunk frat boys who get it in their heads to beat some poor homosexual, are doing it because of the person's sexual orientation. It's an act of hatred and ignorance, and should be prosecuted just as severely as other hate crimes. There's a lot of anger and hatred and righteousness in America, and it's really got to stop. I'd be happy if I saw more homosexuals expressing their love for one another, even by just holding hands. I'd be happy if I saw more heterosexuals expressing their love. I'd be happy if people showed love, period, and stopped acting so angry and hateful.

April 25, 2007, 10:17 p.m.When you take a group of people and place their worth above others that is not liberty and justice for all now is it? There should be no such laws in a country where all men are created equal should there? Hate crime laws have no place on the books of America without stricking a few lines from our Constitution first and I belive the Constutition is set in stone and the liberals in this country should leave it alone. It's worked for over 200 years and if left alone will work for another 200.

April 25, 2007, 11:08 p.m.No one should be beaten, burned, lynched, etc. because of their race, beliefs, or sexual orientation.
But consider this, White homosexuals could own and abuse slaves same as straight white men. How many male slaves were raped by their white homosexual owners? How many male slave children were raped?
You cannot compare homosexuals and blacks. Blacks were double damned, and triple abused. And when they finally got their freedom, there was no freedom. They were still raped, beaten, lynched. Burned, and so on.
White male homosexuals could own land, slaves, etc. They could vote. There is no common history here.

April 25, 2007, 11:39 p.m.A true Christian should have enough generosity in his/her heart to respect his/her fellowman and woman and allow them to find Happiness with whomever they wish!
After all, the Man they are believed to follow NEVER said a word for or against homosexuality during his stay here on earth! And yet we hang our biases and convictions on the words of mythical old Leviticus speaking to his own tribe only!
In a more modern time, whose future is threatened by the unknown effects of Global Warming, it is stupid and criminal to consider notions that in effect sentence every woman and man to be breeders and to procreate - to the demise of animals and plants all over this world...
Nature, our Nature that we share with animals and plants is NOT enhanced by an orthodox belief in heterosexuality as the end all and be all. Rather, Nature's desperate pleas for BALANCE - as heard in the storms and upheavals of our climates - call for equal respect for the Heterosexual as well as the Homosexual!

April 25, 2007, 11:42 p.m.What an incredible strategy! The liberals and extreme left want to stop the rest of the country from commenting on the sexual deviants and more critically stop Christians from commenting on Islam.
The real issue here for the dems is to enable various police and other agencies to arrest or detain any Christian who speaks out about the 2% of homosexuals in the U.S. (Yes I know the gays like to claim they are 10%)
Even worse, if a Christian even talks about the Islamofacists and the hate religions like Islam in public, or on the web (like this), they would be convicted under this law as well. This is not just about gays, it is intended to legislate morality as they feel it should be!

April 26, 2007, 12:07 a.m.From Article: "We stand today with many in the African-American community who also recognize that one's sexuality can be changed, but one's skin color cannot,"
If a black person really wanted to, they could go through painful treatments to "become" white. If they really wanted to, they could paint there face in makeup every day of their lives, and live as a white person.
Why not do this? Because it is a LIE! Every bit as much as it is a lie for a gay person to say they are straight.
Why is it so hard for some straight "normal" people to understand that gay people are in no way aroused or attracted to people of the opposite sex, and there is NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT!

April 26, 2007, 1:03 a.m.my dad was part of a gay bashing incident by default (he was with the guys who did it) 40 yrs ago when he was in the military. A bunch of drunk overly aggressive guys "burning off steam". The guy was seriously injured and thrown through a window...he could have died. My dad is a little homophobic (he was raised that way) so until that night he said a lot of the same things that I have seen posted here and elsewhere...after that night he understood how ABSOLUTELY WRONG it was. But back then (and even now in MANY places) he could have proclaimed his involvement and no-one would have done anything about it! When i was in high school a kid i knew was beaten badly and had an earring ripped out of his ear because he was gay. Some lesbians i have known have been through worse...they all told people about it but it was blown off as isolated incidents or "harmless" teasing. This is why we NEED THIS LAW! People like that do not stop unless there is impetus to do so!

April 26, 2007, 5:36 a.m."Hate Crime" is a tough issue and I can see both sides of it to an extent. But really, aren't MOST crimes a result of "hate"?! With the exception of simple theft, which is neutral towards its victim (the goal being merely to acquire money or property), if someone beats the crap out of you, rapes you, or kills you, isn't it usually because they HATE you? Certainly some minorities tend to be victimized more, so I can understand their feelings. But, it is ironic to see minority factions vying with each other as to who is "worthy" to be included under this law! I think we need to enforce the existing laws equally and fairly. I got beat up in school for being a "nerd" - but I am white and not overtly gay so does it qualify as a "hate" crime? Are nerds a protected minority? Violent criminals should be fully prosecuted no matter whom they attack and I don't care what they were "thinking" at the time!

April 26, 2007, 6:25 a.m.Nothing burns me up more to read a comment like "you can change your sexual preference" Like the statement made in the article by Alan Chambers. If you think you can you are as delusional as Michael Jackson who did in fact change his skin color. And all these supporters who say I know people who have changed and they aren't gay anymore or "I'm not gay anymore they are deluding themselves or straight out lying. I can go into a yahoo chat room and be hit on by "straight" married men all day long.It comes down to cowardace. There has been such shame put upon homosexuals many choose to live secret double lives. It's really very sad. I do not support a "hate crime" bill as I feel a violent crime deserves the same punishment no matter what the skin color or sexual orientation.

April 26, 2007, 6:52 a.m.Well, along the same lines of thinking on the hate crimes (just for amusment of course, I'm for the hate crime issue myself :)) let's just make rape against children the same as rape against adults. I mean all it boils down to is raping a person; who cares if it is a child.

April 26, 2007, 7:16 a.m.Hate crime enhancements are just one more effort to do the right thing. I grant you that there are already laws on the books that should address assaults against gay people, but until hatred and prejudice are somehow taken out of the culture--which includes the legal system--that effort is something that we need.

April 26, 2007, 7:23 a.m."We call upon Congress to promote legislation that affirms authentic equality and protects our religious freedoms."
Apparently hating on gays and lesbians is a religious freedom and needs to be promoted. Gosh, I didn't know that. I bet if the perpetrators of anti-gay hate crimes knew that, they could have used it in their legal defense. Where was Alan Chambers then? Oh that's right he was probably gay at that time.
"We, as former homosexuals, are of less value and worth less legal protection now then when we were living as homosexuals."
You know Alan, since you think it's so awesome being gay, then just for grins, try telling all your Christian friends that you think of becoming gay once again and let's see how many of them will invite you to their next get-together.

April 26, 2007, 8:34 a.m.We have all been discriminated against at some point in our lives. And we have all discriminated against some person or group at some time. Discrimination is only one factor of a hate crime. I may not agree with the homosexual lifestyle, but I don't have the right to infringe on someone elses rights simply because of their race, religion, sex, or even their sexual preference. That is a hate crime. This African-American group should understand that as well as anyone.

April 30, 2007, 12:44 p.m.The hate crimes bill doesn't prevent you from having bigoted opinions and feelings...it just says that you can't cause violence to another person because of those feelings....
If you don't like or approve of homosexuality in your private life...go ahead...speak your mind....that's okay with us...as long as you don't discriminate and justify violence in your public life.....
How do you think Jesus Christ would vote on the issue...?
