STONERS
April 26, 2007, 1 a.m.Xinhua News Agency said the children were hospitalized after eating breakfast Wednesday at a private kindergarten in Zhengzhou city in Henan province. Thirty had been released and the others remained under observation.
Doctors believe soybean milk given to the children was not boiled properly, Xinhua said.
Mass poisonings are common in China, which has been struggling to improve a dismal food safety record. Manufacturers often mislabel food products or add illegal substances to them. Cooks routinely disregard hygiene rules.

April 26, 2007, 1:37 a.m.After the longstanding refusal of Chinese officials to grant visas to FDA inspectors to track down the Wheat Gluten contamination, one wonders just how bad the Chinese food market must get before they even admit they have a problem.
Perhaps, with over a billion people and each competing for the cash the politicians hope to extort, other lives are just a liability in the eyes of the Communist "leaders" there. Nothing should ever be allowed to get in the way of their taking all they can grab for themselves and family/friends. After all, this is one of the few remaining "worker's paradise" locations.

April 26, 2007, 3:13 a.m.There was amovie crew over there in the 1980's , all famous actors , I think Harrison Ford was on the set , Anyhow the crew kept getting sick . Like cramped up sick and found out the oil that was used for cooking was rancid . Yuk . I found the same experience in a few eateries right here in the good ole US of A .

April 26, 2007, 4:24 a.m.Overuse of oil is carcinogenic also to the body...if the heating temperature of an oil exceeds its limit there is considerable change in the oil itself, rancid and overused oil can be potentially hazardous to your health. Most US eateries change their oils once or twice a shift according to the color and amount of food particles in it...overuse tends to make changes in the tastes of the foods its cooked in if its not changed. So diners beware of your eating establishments or should i say OFF the Beaten Path greasey spoons.

April 26, 2007, 5:11 a.m.The poor children, I am really sorry for them. As far as China is concernced, it is really crazy how big the difference is between the hyped-up cities like Shanghai and the poor central areas...

April 26, 2007, 8:24 a.m.In case you haven't read this article
U.S. hogs ate contaminated pet food from China
U.S. food safety authorities said that thousands of hogs had eaten salvaged pet food from China that had contained the industrial chemical melamine.
Urine from hogs in California, North Carolina and South Carolina tested positive for melamine, a chemical contained in rice-protein concentrate imported from China, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday. Hogs in New York, Utah and, possibly, Ohio also are believed to have eaten tainted pet food, but their urine has not yet been tested.

April 26, 2007, 12:40 p.m.I would agree they obviously don't care about safety. It they make more profits so be it. I changed my cat's food 4 times in the past few months because of the cat food recall, it is just a matter of time before it effect the food for the US general population. Don't we grow enough food here?????

April 26, 2007, 9:26 a.m.Another good reason to stop eating meat. I wonder how bad a lot of things are that come from China. I see a lot of foodstuffs labeled "made in china." I bypass them all. I also will never buy pet products made there. How do we know some old milk bones(delmonte) or treats do not have taint in them?
The distributors want us to continue buying just because they think sales have suffered enough? Ha! Just because China will not allow fda inspectors does not mean they did not have to inspect food once it was here.
Buy local and organic. Let the companies chock on their own greed. If it wasn't for the pets dying I could enjoy their demise.

April 26, 2007, 10:05 a.m.Well, China has already said "Economic Intersts come first", so they will continue to poison the air, water and now their own customers while the US keeps buying their junk which keeps this whole ugly circle going.

April 26, 2007, 2:09 p.m.It may not have come from the factory itself. Many items are contaminated while being transported. For example, the same container that was used to transport the meat products to the pet food factory could have been used to transport raw materials used in the making of plastics. If the container was not thoroughly cleaned after it transported the raw materials, then the meat products would have been contaminated. In a country like China where there are few safety standards or inspections, cross-contamination occurs frequently.

April 26, 2007, 1:13 p.m.This is thte reason we don't want China to import food to the USA. They have no safety standards.

April 26, 2007, 2:03 p.m.China does need to better control how raw ingredients are produced and handled, but this is not only a Chinese problem. Many people in the U.S get sick due to fresh produce that is improperly handled or watered with contaminated water, most recently spinach. Then there was the taco bell food outbreaks. Even Canada has probelms with imported and domestic foods. Imported berries for mexico caused an e-coli outbreak a few years ago that sickened hundreds and we too were affected by the pet food recalls since the product is also manufactured here and the company is Canadian based. More testing needs to be done and if raw products and produce cannot meet the requirements the importation should stop. I read that only 1% of imported food is checked at the ports and only high risk products or items with a poor track record are checked. As sad as it may be I think everything needs to be checked in todays age.

April 26, 2007, 2:44 p.m.This too will pass un-noticed by the Chinese government because they have a seemingly endless supply of people, one dies or gets sick, ten million take their place.

April 26, 2007, 3:13 p.m.China itself is not the problem for us here. We need to take a look at ourselves. Everybody wants to make a buck or save a buck. And the things they are willing to do to do so, are what is sometimes disgusting. Sometimes that means currying favor with politicians so that the number of food inspectors or inspections drops. Also, why do we need to import food to feed our Fido's and Arnold Ziffel's?

April 26, 2007, 8:34 p.m.And still FEMA hasn't responded to this tragedy. Fema hates Chinese as much as they hate blacks. And this proves it.

April 27, 2007, 12:58 a.m.They do not even care what they feed their own people! I heard China's citizens are not even allowed to participate in the stock market.
What a disgusting country!
