Posted by: TheVisionary 2 years, 7 months ago

As women gain visibility in the blogosphere, they are targets of sexual harassment and threats. Men are harassed too, and lack of civility is an abiding problem on the Web. But women, who make up about half the online community, are singled out in more starkly sexually threatening terms.

This is not new to me only the little unpowerful pc geek feels the desire to do such things! People are feeling powerful on the internet with no limits and no manners which leads them to rude and even horrible acts.

"A 2005 study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that the proportion of Internet users who took part in chats and discussion groups plunged from 28 percent in 2000 to 17 percent in 2005..."

Given the conduct of many posters on sites like this one, drops in participation are not surprising. Soon, only flamers will be left on most discussion threads.

1 word- "duh!!!!!!!!"... Men experience far less harassment because they are the culprits of most harassment acts. WOmen have always been disrespected and will be moreso online because these men think they can get away with it and that its hard to catch them. How wrong they are though! Anyone harasses me, I will get ahold of their ISP and file a formal complaint.

When I decided to join the world of the internet my children warned me that it was a different sort of place where simple words that I use could bring up all sorts of lets say interesting results. Once I decided to be a blogger I set up my own rules, to me posting a comment on line should be no more different than talking in real life, so no profanity, no really crude remarks, no personel name calling, no sexist remarks, I also decided never to sink a story or give a bad rating to anyone as their opinions always need to be weighed as well. I hope that women remain a part of all blogging site because their line of thinking is different than mens and usually provides some rational insight into issues.

So in closing all I have to say is hang in there and ingore the morons.

shameful. Women and children are targets and always will be. Perhaps the internet police should take some threats seriously - could be a potential shooter, rappist etc.
