Now they should just send a similar bill back to Bush and let him veto again. Don't give him another blank check.

My goodness, a veto! Imagine the shock on the Democrats faces! Did the Democrats learn anything? No, they learned nothing. What a waste of time when there are so many problems which need BI-PARTISAN support. The congress, thanks to the Democrats, is more divided than ever.

If you focus on the "pork" you're missing the real point of this legislation. Unfortunately "pork" is attached to virtually every bill...but Bush is ignoring the voice of Americans....we want out of a war that should never have started, is costing the lives and quality of lives of our spouses/children, is costing BILLIONS and BILLIIONS of dollars that would be well spent for health care, education, etc at home, requiring detention of persons at GITMO without requisite due process, is destroying our reputation in the world community, and has led to torture, murder and lies/cover ups re deaths by "friendly fire"....whether we get out now, or in 6 months or in 6 years, the region will continue to be unstable...it has been for hundreds if not thousands of years...It takes guts, courage and freethinking to admit a mistake.....and waging war in Iraq

The whole Iraq debacle could have been prevented had Congress done its duty in the first place and not handed a blank check to Bush in a panic after 9-11.

According to the AP's Congressional correspondent David Espo

Democrats inserted benchmarks into the legislation that Bush is expected to veto.

Under the measure, the Iraqi government would be called on to meet standards for developing its own forces, giving the United States the authority to pursue extremists, establishing a militia disarmament program, pursuing reconciliation between Sunni and Shiite Iraqis, revising its de-Baathification program, enacting legislation to allocate oil resources, reducing sectarian violence and protecting minority rights

The particulars are similar to the benchmarks Bush laid out last winter.

But Democrats went one step further, specifically tying the Iraqi government's progress to the U.S. military's deployment.

If they were already in agreement on "benchmarks" why even bother with a bill they knew Bush would veto?

Either stand up & cut off the funding for the war in Iraq or move on to another issue. This game is a waste of time

                    djrevelky,

That wouldn't come close to the amount of pork the Repugs have added on during their time of majority. Especially, the 6 years before they lost it.

For 57 years the word WAR has been a losing proposition for America-

                          We lost in Korea

                          We lost in Viet Nam

                          We are losing in Iraq

We are losing the WAR on poverty

We are losing the WAR on drugs

How many times do you gotta get hit over the head before you change your position

Maybe we should forget the word WAR & try winning at peace

4 years ago Bush parachuted on an aircraft carrier and declared that major war operations in Iraq were over. 4 years later we are still there. How can anyone believe or support this idiot. Just think in another year and a half W can retire to Texas with all his millions and laugh about the whole 8 years on how this Texan SCR*WED America.

Talk about a waste of time/money. I can't think of any reason why anyone would vote for ANY of those Democrats again when they have thus proven they are too damn STUPID to know they can't override this veto. And, they were too STUPID to modify the bill BEFORE it got vetoed even KNOWING that it was going to be vetoed. Fire them all! Way too much politicking and too little useful work.I almost think all politicians should be limited to ONE term - that way they would never be wasting time positioning themselves for the next election.

They don't have to go through with another impeachment debacle.

All Congress has to do is cut off the funding for Iraq. Very simple! Unfortunately, that would take political will and guts. Something I don't think we will be seeing anytime soon

It is a maxim in the military that, "No plan survives first contact with the enemy." Just what does congress plan to do to the extremist that mess up their timetable, send in the troop? Wait can't do that they are all ready there and that would change the timetable.
