The bones are "in very good condition" and belong to either "a ruler or a priest," Roger Angel Cossio, the Bolivian archeologist who made the discovery, told Reuters on Wednesday.

He said the tomb -- containing a diadem and fist-sized carved pendant of solid gold -- survived centuries of looting by Spanish invaders and unscrupulous raiders who depleted Tiwanaku of many precious treasures.

So who gets the jewels and gold?? And I have one other question...what is the difference between grave looting and archaeologists who discover graves and keep what's inside such as jewels, or are they placed in a museum.

It's nice to know there are still finds out there.

Kriicket, I agree sometimes it seems like archaeologists might be similar to looters. It can sometimes look that way to the indigenous people who live in a region. But archeologists do not keep what is inside a find. Grave looters are searching for art and gold, things that can be easily sold and when they take the objects they strip them of their provenance and context. Archaeologists search for signs of inhabitation so that they can learn more about the story of the people who lived there. I hope these finds will make their way to a museum.

Deidre - you are 1005 wrong archaeologists are the biggest looters of antiquity & the major crime is that they do it in the name of preservation of the past

_I travelled all over Turkey to see the ancient artifacts there - what did I see in most places? plaster casts of what was there before some archaeologist carted it off

I had to go to the British Museum to see them in some artificially lit gallery instead of their origional settings because of this thievery

a looter is a looter - tell that to the countries that want their treasures back - we are a mobile society now & we can go to see the artifacts in their origional place-there is no excuse now for the removal of any thing unless it is in immediate danger such as flooding - earthquake etc
