Posted by: STONERS 2 years, 6 months ago

There is an ethanol juggernaut moving through Congress that will call for a sevenfold increase in biofuels production _ almost all of it ethanol _ over the next 15 years. Presidential primaries, anger over gasoline prices and global warming make ethanol a potent political issue for both parties.

Livestock farmers "are having jitters" over ethanol, worried there won't be enough corn left for the pigs.

She might as well be talking to a wall.

The ethanol issue has nothing to do with the enviroment and everything to do with reducing foriegn oil imports. Ethanol is a lower grade carbon fuel and to get similar power from it one must burn more of it, ask people who are using it and they will tell you their milage has gone down. The only reason politicians are promoting it as green is to look good in the public eye.

Why they're stuck on corn I just don't know, there are much better crops to get ethanol from than corn. and won't cut into food acreage

Corn based ethanol is nothing but welfare for corn farmers and politicians buying votes. If Iowa wasn't so important to presidential hopefuls, we wouldn't be in this mess.

              We should follow Brazil's example.

80% of their cars are dual fueled, and can run on ethanol and gasoline. As a result their dependance on foreign oil imports is very low. Unfortunately for us, our climate doesn't support sugar cane unlike Brazil's climate, however we have millions of acres of corn available.

It's more environmentally friendly, but yes it does require a bit more ethanol to see the same mileage as gasoline.

The train has left the station on corn, folks. There will be no going back unfortunately.

So ... we pay much more for fuel AND food. Get used to it.

When somewhen develops a cheap enzyme that can convert cellulose to alcohol the need to use corn for ethanol will go away (pretty much) That and biodiesal from oilseeds is where the research dollars should be going, not to the corn lobby Long live switchgrass !!

Its hard to understand, why everyone is concentrating so much on corn. There are other grains as well. Canada is mainly on wheat, EU sugar-beet etc. Also no one discuss distillers grain (dried or wet) that is a feed to catle. Before 70 years, oil refineries were not as half sufficient as today. We have to start from some point, however fossil fuels are not endless. This is something we should remember. All wars and conflicts are manily about energy, and this trend wil not change.
