May 3, 2007, 4:34 p.m.CNN just sent out a breaking news email that he was placed under the detail because of a specific threat made against him, even though the wire reports say the opposite - not sure which is correct

May 3, 2007, 4:41 p.m.AP reporting that Obama requested the protection but no other info on the wire as to why...meaning if it was because of a specific threat.

May 3, 2007, 4:46 p.m.Secret Service spokesman Eric Zahren said Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff authorized Obama's protection after consultations with the congressional advisory committee. Zahren would not provide details of what led to the extra security, but said, "I'm not aware it was based on any threat."

May 3, 2007, 9:38 p.m.He will most likely be the next president. Probably better he gets used to the secret service protection now.
I hope that's all it is.

May 3, 2007, 9:56 p.m.Why anyone would "slam" or deny a presidential hopeful from any side the protection he deserves is beyond me. Is it submerged racism? Some kind of deep, unjustified hatred of a person that denies them safety? It's disgusting. Partisan politics and the divisivness of America as brought into power with the Bush elections is an insult to America and the freedoms we should have.
As for slamming it based on money? What country are you living in? Apparently it's not the one where some nutjob President's spent more than half a trillion dollars on a war that didn't need to be fought. Or the one where a no-bid company already making bank on their "construction" contracts bilks the US out of 3 billion dollars with no penalty. Or the one where our national debt has skyrocketed from nothing to the highest in history.
Disgusting.

May 3, 2007, 11:34 p.m.I truly hope Obama is not the Dem candidate, but the thinly
& not so thinly veiled racist remarks posted by some here make me feel that I might enjoy his presidency if only to poke these bastards in the eye

May 4, 2007, 12:40 a.m.I never liked Obama after he said the country should stop feeling sorry for New Orleans -what? And fire Imus - I can't stand Imus, but it's so typical - a white guy says something and it's racial, a black guy says the same and it's ok

May 4, 2007, 12:44 a.m.All candidates must be protected.
If one of them is covered before the others, may be due to covered information telling he is at a higher risk.
Prejudicism and bigotry have diminished during the last several years. It is still a very critical problem.
We need one more generation to be civilized in this respect.
(Wishful thinking perhaps.)

May 4, 2007, 12:51 a.m.Republicans are't racist - get a job, support your kids, pay taxes - it's easy - MS has the highest un rate - with all the work rebuilding, it's not hard to find a job - if you want to - to some the monthly check is good enough

May 4, 2007, 1:40 a.m.I have a friend who is from the deep south, and a big Obama supporter, and the first thing she said when he announced his candidacy was, 'we're right on the edge of it being possible but there are still a lot of ugly people out there, and it's only a matter of time before he'll have to be put under protection."
Sad that she turned out to be so right so fast.

May 4, 2007, 6:39 a.m.The fact is there are enough idiots out there who would try an assination attempt just as there was enough to try for JFK, John Lennon, the Pope, ect. I am not a Democrat but after watching the first Dem debates Obama impressed me. His color makes no difference to me but it will be a major factor in many of minds. I think Obama could be a good leader in a few years but his experience is definetly not enough to win this time around.

May 4, 2007, 8:52 a.m.Perot claimed to be threatened too. I would not doubt if threats are coming from within the gov. organization. They do not want to loose their power and only want the game played the way they want it.
Can you imagine how many entrenched gov. officals would loose their jobs if an independent got in?
O.k for us to loose jobs and benefits though.

May 4, 2007, 8:57 a.m.As a conservative Independant my biggest concern is not whether the next president is Republican or Democrat, it's that they do a good job of keeping the country safe and continue growing the economy.
I would truthfully have to say though that I would lean more to having a Democrat if for nothing more than to give all the whining libs a chance to put their money where their mouth is. Their fantasy of feeling they were cheated has definately brought out the worst in them.
Biggest problem they have now is that the two leading candidates they have, one has no experience and the other is simply unelectable. I hope they get this figured out before the election or it will be another 4 years of listening to degrading accusations and shrill hatred spewing from what sounds like a bunch of spoiled brats.

May 4, 2007, 9:19 a.m.Kel - Have you read about or heard Rush Limbaugh's "Barack the Magic Negro" parody? Sung to "Puff the Magic Dragon" tune by a white guy doing an "Al Sharpton" impression - very heavy on the "Ebonics". Shows definitely that "Racial bigotry and hatred is still alive and well in this country" Limbaugh, who bills himself as the iconoclastic conservative "thinker" reverts to outright racial humor on a nationally syndicated show. I hope his fans are pound if their hero.
