Bush has used the words "mistakes," "apologize" and "responsibility" in trying to calm public anger over the Iraq war, substandard care of wounded veterans and the botched response to Hurricane Katrina. Still his approval rating hovers around 35 percent in opinion polls, just above the lows of his two-term presidency.

Karlyn Bowman, a senior fellow on public opinion at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, said people were fairly cynical due to the unpopular Iraq war and not paying much attention to Bush or his top officials. The judgment on his presidency is a negative one and explanations or apologies are unlikely to change that," Bowman said. "It's one of the sourest moods I've seen in a long time and it washes over everything."

What's the point in saying you're sorry, and then just continuing on doing the same thing?

I think one of the things that ******es people off the most is the assumption that we're all idiots who don't see what's going on.

Oh, I get it . After Bush says the responsibility lies with him we are supposed to forgive and forget. Responsibility certainly does lie with him, or does he lie with responsibility, or is he a responsible liar?

"Mistakes have been made" is hardly owning up.

When you are standing around with a smoking gun, "I'm sorry" doesn't do the dead soldiers much good, does it? If Osama Bin Laden said he was sorry for 9/11, would we all forgive him?

Bush et al are sorry like any criminals allocuting at sentencing hearings. They're sorry they got caught.

Apologies worked for Clinton because when Clinton lied, nobody died.

This administration has never apologized. They have said once that they made mistakes over one issue. The president didn't say "I'm sorry" though. He is without remorse or character.

if bush had one ounce of honor he'd fall on his sword for the good of the country.
