Cell Phone Lock to Curb Violent Student Videos »

Posted by: david_nwpa 2 years, 6 months ago

Some school-age bullies aren't just picking on other students; they're filming the beatings with cell phones and sending the clips to friends. Politicians want to help parents stay one technical step ahead of their kids.

Strange how the technology that can be used to save lives and protect people is being used to harm weak students. It would make a lot more sense to have cell phones that lack cameras so that students could still make phone calls, but not have the video attachment.

The underlying problem here is that kids find it "cool" to hurt one another. Bullying must be targeted and stopped whenever and wherever it occurs.

This is the end of the world, really. An unholy splice of cruelty and dumb self-celebration.

It makes one wonder, in more sympathetic contemplation, how brutalized the kids are who do this sort of sh*t; and where the responsibility to stop them falls. Everywhere, I'd say: on their parents, their teachers, their peers. Everywhere, immediately.

Geez! This is the new fad? Unbelievable! This is just plain mindlessness at it's worst. With today's technology at it's helm.

I can remember reading somewhere that there are a few schools that were beginning contemplating banning phones all together because they were finding students, when were having problems with a person in school that day, would call their friends throughout school and those who weren't in school (too old, dropped out, whatever) and have them gather immediately after school and they would pounce on the unsuspecting child. Isn't that wonderful?? (sarc) It all just drives me insane. It is as if every new device that is being presented into use for convenience, or safety, or fun seems to be twisted and abused by someone! Then it needs to have these tight regulations put into place to protect the people it is supposed to be helping. It's just nuts.

AFAIC, all schools should have jammers on cell phones, which could be turned off in case of emergency, such as a shootings, weather alerts, hostages, etcetera.

This should be done not only for stopping bullies, but there's rampant cheating among students using their cameras to take pics of future tests, exams, etcetera.

I guess I'm forced to wonder out loud what is the main problem here - the violence or recording/sharing it? IMHO, it is the bullying violence - the video aspect is just an added obscenity to the initial sin.

Schools, teachers, parents and civil authorities should be looking at how to stop the violence. Look into what is causing it to become so prevalent, and what can be done to take away the apparent 'street cred' that it seems to get the kids.

I don't know the answer, but I do think we should at least be asking the right questions.

I don't know. Personally, I have a rule that whenever I plan to commit a felony, I make doubly certain that I DON'T film myself doing it.

Round up a few of these videos and use them to throw the bullies in the slammer for 5-10 years for aggravated assault and the practice might loose some of it's appeal to these idiots.
