Posted by: Fabienne 2 years, 7 months agoFrom the article: "Dell Inc. has agreed to work with Microsoft Corp. and Novell Inc. under an alliance the rival software makers formed last year to make it easier for the Windows operating system and the increasingly popular Linux system to work together, the companies said Sunday. On Sunday, Microsoft and Novell said Dell has agreed to buy Suse Linux Enterprise Server certificates from Microsoft..."

OS X is far ahead.

May 7, 2007, 11:19 a.m.Deal aimed at better serving corporate customers using both Linux and Windows; Dell will help customers migrate to Novell's Suse Linux.

May 7, 2007, 12:32 p.m.I suppose they think they are making sure they are providing a "higher quality" product by BUYING some sort of Linux certificate from Novell, but it isn't really necessary. All the essential server software, and a great deal of desktop software, is available for FREE. Maybe this is just some sort of support agreement or something? Probably just for set-up and installation issues? More likely a method to significantly increase the price of the server while providing minimal benefit.

May 7, 2007, 1:52 p.m.A sad day for Dell. The corporate weasels have won out.
As an early fan of SuSE Linux I've found that the latest SuSE offerings have usability issues, albeit very stable.
The real issue is to appear like this will "inoculate" users from potential M$ patent infringement lawsuits, yet M$ doesn't have a leg to stand on in court. M$ is bullying and threatening, and the sheep fall in line to sign up with DADDY.
It's truly sad!

May 7, 2007, 2:48 p.m.Microsoft claims to have patented code in Linux.
Yet I've never seen any case proving this.
They suggest a threat to corporate users who don't pay a licence fee.
Is this a form of corporate extortion?
Is this a criminal act?
And if so has anyone reported them, Microsoft, to the police, FBI, whoever?

'
There is a difference between a real and implied threat.
I'm sure if Micro$oft was made to prove their claim, that
they have patented code in the Linux kernel, they would
fail.
'
No harm would come of it to Micro$oft who have lawyers
to sleaze their way out, for them.
'
One person who could really make a difference with
this issue is Linus Thorvald, who created the Linux
kernel.

May 7, 2007, 9 p.m.Jaba the Hut has gobbled up another piece of the market!
This monster just keeps on getting fatter and greedier every day!
The last frontier of freedom and open source world has fallen to the greed of the monster!
A sad day, indeed!

May 7, 2007, 9:02 p.m.It's merely an attempt to put a price tag on Linux. Dell were better off with just Red Hat.

May 8, 2007, 4:58 a.m.Attempting to cooperate with anyone is quite a sea change for MS. It remains to be seen how it will work in practice ; the old proverb about the leopard not being able to change its spots may hold in this case.
