Abstinence plus is a message I can accept. However, I am opposed to the idea of abstinent until marriage. What happens to the gay and lesbian children who cannot marry legally in Kansas. By these standards, such children should live a completely chaste life and put down their inner desires. Ultimately, they will be set forth to live a life of doubt and despair thanks to the heaploads of crap from their Board of Ed.

    Heteros should love the program.

My state (WA) just passed a state law that schools must include all aspects of sexuality in their teaching, including birth control.

Unfortunately, such advanced concepts are beyond the reasoning of our legislature here in Ohio.

We've languished in the past, as a reactionary, fundamentalist christian, bigoted Secretary of State campaigned for a super-DOMA law, then tried to use religion as a wedge in his slanderous campaign to with the governorship.

Thankfully, Ken Blackwell was soundly defeated and slunk off with his tial between his legs, but the GOP still runs both the House and Senate, so we won't get anything intelligent passed until the troglodytes are tossed in '08.

"'Abstinence until marriage is the best message we can give our children,' Martin said."

I'm always amazed at the plain ol' lack of commonsense, never mind realism, of such a POV. Kids WILL have sex--and why shouldn't they? Its part of becoming an adult, of enjoying your bod, of learning who you are.

What should be taught is how to negotiate birth control and prevent sexually transmitted diseases, rather than trying to control a defining human appetite.

It's great to see pockets of sanity breaking out all across America, replacing dogmatism. The data are now VERY clear. Teaching only abstinence does not work. It results in higher rates of teen pregnancy and VD.

Those who say abstinence is the best policy are absolutely right, and we definitely should get that message to young people in our schools. But the young brain is notoriously poor in concerning itself with future consequences.

We need to recognize that many who hear the abstinence message will ignore it. If they are going to listen to their hormones, then we need to give them the factual information about avoiding pregnancy and particularly deadly venereal diseases. That way they stand a better chance of maturing to the point that they can understand the law of consequences, and begin to live a safer lifestyle.

Thank God someone has some sense again. Information is so important to teens regarding sex. Once they are fully informed and not lied to, they can make their own informed decisions. Tell them lies, and their decisions will always come out wrong.

And we know now that teaching abstinence only is ridiculous since we spent millions on a program that horribly failed.
