May 11, 2007, 3:58 a.m.awesome. trade issues are some of the few I usually disagree with Dems on. It is good to see that the leadership is ignoring the more populist members of the party and lowering trade barriers while ensuring adherence to labor standards and environmental guidelines

May 11, 2007, 8:21 a.m.I'm cautiously optimistic as well. But I do hope it is a sign that things are changing.

May 11, 2007, 7:32 a.m."I think today is a recognition of the results of the November election," Ms. Pelosi said at a news conference. "It doesn't mean that this paves the way for trade agreements where we have other obstacles. But where it comes down to labor standards and environment, this is enormous progress."
Amazing. It looks like a bi-partisan agreement. It sounds like bi-partisan agreement.. Perhaps it smells like a bi-partisan agreement.
Now how about making a habit of it?

May 11, 2007, 8:54 a.m.Yeah it's all wonderful but how can it ever be enforced. We don't enforce labor laws in this country. Does anyone seriously believe that wages will improve in 3rd world countries so that these folks can reciprocate for American products? They just lose out to the lowest bidding labor in non-complying countries. The public won't get the real story from corporate media. But maybe we can start thinking for ourselves. Click link on this story for article on the trade deficit. Check the bottom for high profit low-labor products we export. Can say from experience the machinery we export likely has little American content. The raw materials exports do little to increase jobs here but are driving our cost through the roof for the same at home . Have you tried buying copper plumbing or wiring for your home lately? What will happen to our cost for farm products. Solution is BALANCED trade, period! Trade with those that want what we have to offer in return. Seems simple to me.

May 11, 2007, 10:54 a.m.I love that just the fact that Bush is in "accord" with the representatives of 50 percent of the country is newsworthy.

May 11, 2007, 2:10 p.m.Immigration and trade - Democrats and Bush agree, because they both want to screw the rest of us in exactly the same way.
When a wolf and a shark both invite you in for tea, will you go?

May 11, 2007, 5:49 p.m.Thanks beau, good article.
So many great responses already, that it leaves little else to say.
The thought of an agreement sounds good , but I keep getting this sick feeling that this is not what it appears to be. And that this will not help All of the American People!

May 11, 2007, 8:13 p.m.The world trade is a fact and it is the way for the future.
In the same way a considerable number of Americans, are apprehensive about the fairness of trade agreements with Korea and Latin American countries; those countries are apprehensive about the reciprocal fairness.
Questioning of the agreements by politicians and the peoples of the US, Colombia, Panama, Peru and Korea come from the "Left and Right" wings of the political spectrum.
Labor conditions and laws are less than perfect in all of the above (US. Col. Pa. Pe. Ko.}
Violence against labor union leaders has happened in the past in Colombia, but it was not patronized by the government. Many of them were unrelated criminal activity and antagonistic policies in many instances patronized by international corporations (Coca Cola, Ch. Bananna etc.)
On the other hand, some of the labor laws on those countries are more protective to the worker than in the US.
I doubt the US would be interested in reciprocating.

May 11, 2007, 8:52 p.m.Yet again, Bush demonstrates that he believes the values we hold dear apply to us, and only us. Congress should not have to negotiate something like this, it should just be given.
