May 11, 2007, 3:23 p.m.And what should you do if you have a retarded or autistic child? Should you spend oodles of money on therapy and drugs so you can claim your doing all you can or do nothing aside from providing a loving home. Seems to me you get the same result at the end of the day except that the person spending money on therapy and drugs is probably giving their child less real love and certainly wasting money.
Unless they have a cure for autismn pouring money into therapy is just tossing it out a window.
And this fails mention just how severe the autismn is... could it be that the kid would get nothing from therapy or drugs? very likely.
And guess what, just because one family wants to try therapy doesn't mean its the only or even best approach. Frankly I can't stand Travolta or his alien church but until he starts beating his kids with wire hangers no one should give a ******.
Seems to me if you read the story the guy is more upset that Travolta wouldn't donate to some autistic charity.

May 11, 2007, 3:38 p.m.The man is a freak. I don't care how much money him and Cruise have, they are freaks. Anybody who believes this drivel maybe needs to see a real shrink. I am proud that I have never contributed a single cent to their coffers by attending one of their movies. Definitely haven't missed anything.
If this story is true he should be investigated by DSS. "Psychiatric Drugs Harm Children" that's what Preston's shirt says. I would have gone to a cheap souvenir shop and had one printed that said "Scientology Harms Adults and Children". They aren't neccesarily wrong about the over prescribing of psychoactive drugs to kids, it is done far too often but look at what they believe! They want to hook you up to an e-meter and evaluate your thetans. Somewhere there is a middle ground where there is some sanity. But it has nothing to do with Xanu.

May 11, 2007, 3:40 p.m.and what is the point of this story? To go after another celebrity? to try to corner them into a news story.... let them handle their child as they the parents see fit... autism is a problem, there is no know cure... perhaps the child will be helped by diving intervention from the mothership whenever it pases by... and how crazy is that? (hey folks a bit of sarcasim there!)
We all need to stay out of other peoples lives..whoever they are. UNLESS that is , there is some obvious sign of neglect or trauma... so, is their child neglected? or hurt? I think not. so let em alone...

May 11, 2007, 3:49 p.m.Autism is a slippery diagnosis. It's not like other mental illnesses which are more clearly harmful to individuals.

May 11, 2007, 4:50 p.m.and what is so wrong about not wanting to infect your children with drugs vs natural methods? drugs are after all, well, drugs. synthetic poisons introduced to the body to help mask the symptons illness and disease, at least for the short term.

May 11, 2007, 4:59 p.m.If this is true then it is a disgusting thing to deny your child treatment for anything ifyou can afford it....Even if there is slim chance of improvement...True drugs are not always the answer and can be overused but Autism is not an allergy or chronic flu symptoms it requires some kind of proactive help
But you have to take anything you here about celebreties these days

May 11, 2007, 5:18 p.m.I'd like to see someone come out and say that Autism treatment works 100% of the time without side effects. Even if Travolta wasn't a scientologist, there are plenty of reasons why someone would not want to treat their autistic child with drugs. Most of the treatments aren't even proven.

May 11, 2007, 5:22 p.m.I believe John is a caring person and Father and will do what he thinks is best for his son. I would trust his judgement to do the right thing.

May 11, 2007, 5:59 p.m.I'd love to know how many times this person has been in the Travolta home to see Jett eating nothing but junk food and doing nothing but sitting in front of a TV. Sounds like a I hate John Travolta and I hate Scientology article.

May 11, 2007, 7:20 p.m.Every human for himself man, why do people try to intrudes other people's privacy and tell them what they have to do. If a cancer patient dont want to go and die in a hospital let it be, if that girl want to abort let it be, if a person wants to comitt suicide let it be at the end it dont matter we are all going to die. Peace.

May 11, 2007, 8:20 p.m.To not give a child medical treatment when needed is tantamount to child abuse. The scientologists need to go to intelligence school. God gave us the ability to think, create explore and do many things with the brain he gave us. To be able to create something that could cure and make life more enjoyable and not give it to the afflicted is cruel and inhumane.

May 11, 2007, 8:48 p.m.This news story should be near the top so we can all learn about this condition. I think if John is prepared to take the money as a result of 'fame' he should be prepared to come under public scrutiny

May 11, 2007, 9:29 p.m.Autism is CAUSED by exposure to mercury. Ironically mercury is found in ALL of the leading treatments for autism. The facts are out, autism is caused by innoculations and lingering head fevers.
Travola obviously knows to not let those evil bastards near his child.
Hey wise guy, the government doesnt LOVE us thats a fairytale ..thats for kids. They want to depopulate by any means. Lowering birth rates and increasing death rates. They want a dum population a feeble people, they think they own us like cattle...read agenda 21, rex 84...I could go on but I have a CD to sell. May 11, 2007, 9:40 p.m.This is not the place to try and sell a CD. This is a talk about an illness. You are just plain tacky by doing this. I have a business that I would LOVE to promote any way that I can, but i will not do it this way. I place classified ads on the internet to promote and I suggest that you do the same.
As for John Travolta and his son, I am sure that he has the best thoughts of how to handle this situation. Who are we to say that Jett will not just grow out of it?
John is a great actor and I will continue to watch his movies if they are good movies - not like Pulp Fiction. I didn't much care for that one since he played a thug.

May 11, 2007, 9:41 p.m.Modern Medicine is what got his son autism in the first place. There are over 40 vaccines containing mercury that children can recieve. The CDC pushes them because they are the regulator and the manufacturer of these drugs.
I am with Travolta on this one, even though I think scientologist are rich nuts.

May 11, 2007, 9:57 p.m.It's not like autism is some dreadful disease that requires meds and the like. Therapy for the purpose of improving the brain functions should be an option he should consider, even if it has to be by scientologists. I cant comment too much about scientology since I dont know much about it, nor would I care to look it up. Point is, its his child and he's not being neglectful to this child, so leave the man alone. There's worst parents in the world, look at Alec Baldwin

May 11, 2007, 10:41 p.m.While I don't know John personally I have never even once heard bad things about his character other than people's own opinion about his chosen faith. I believe he and his wife have the best interest of their son in their hearts, they are one of the few Hollywood couples who remain married more than 10 years. Who are we to judge how he chooses to make his son's life better and how do we know how this child is treated at home. My guess is with love and concern for his health. However the bottom line is that it is nobody's business how they choose to deal with the situation.

May 12, 2007, 12:35 a.m.Is there a drug for autism? I have not seen one. Also some people with higher levels of autism function well as being *** holes.
There was a man I worked with who used to come to work and organize shelves and things in a way to suit him. He huffed as though everyone should have things ready in his arrangement. We ignored him and continued on our way.
No ruder than the district manager visiting and expecting the store to be arranged to his liking.

May 12, 2007, 12:36 a.m.I remember a while ago on an A&E Bio, John said, "Not everyone is equipped to be a Scientologist - I was astounded. The true meaning is not everyone can "afford" to be in their fold. It disgusted me, and like other high profilers in the so-called church of wealth. it still does. This is the first I heard that Jett was autistic and it is indeed sad, and I feel for all those who suffer and all those who love them. But most parents, if they have the means will do all they can to help their children. This is negligent and criminal.

May 12, 2007, 2:28 a.m.As a doctor, it is often amusing to read comments on pages such as these. What many of you, including the reject Mr. Travolta, do not realize, is that autism is NOT a psychiatric disorder. It is, in fact, a disorder of several other systems, most notably the gastrointestinal system. I realize that Mr. Travolta is simply an actor and merely reflects that which is on the script in front of him, but I would encourage him in this situation to have a single thought of his own and realize that, if indeed his son is autistic, his own personal thoughts on psychiatry are indeed out of bounds. As per all of the other ignorant comments regarding autism on this post, please....don't eat everything out of the spoon that society feeds you.....discovering your ability to think on your own will set you free.....

May 12, 2007, 2:41 a.m.It's like a Christian Scientist letting their kid die from appendicitis.
Is it freedom of religion...
Since Scientology was created by a science fiction writer on a bet, is it even religion?

May 16, 2007, 2:52 a.m.Here's an interesting one...a while back..say 1985...I was sitting around with a fellow named Del Close...a more than good friend of Mr.Hubbard....In the ramble that Del was accustomed..look up del close...He told me that L.Ron...considered 'Scientology' a joke...and was more than amused with the way it had been taken..as he came up with it..while he and Del were both working as basically Goverment lab rats in the 50's testing LSD..yes..LSD...wrote all of his original ideas..in a haze of many a trips...had no idea it would become the monster it is...if you have read any of the books...and have experience yourself in the many wiles of lsd..you might notice...and realize..that alot of the same ideas..conclusions ,what have you...that you may have come up with yourself...is pretty obviously ..well..a trip.
Del was a character in himself..I had no reason to doubt him..He was one of the co-creator's of Second City..a well known comedy..and other performance venue..as well.look him up.

July 23, 2007, 11:42 p.m.I work with children that have autism! I have never commented on any thing, but I wanted to clear the air. I have read ALL of the research on autism. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA),which is a behavioral approach, is the only scientifically proven therapy for children with an Austim Spectrum Disorder! It has a "non diangnosable rate (meaning theat children are typical and no longer have autism) of almost forty percent, it also has an improvement rate of one hundred percent. Which means that children always improved. The money is worth it, the children's and family's life is changed! It is sad that the Travolta's are refusing to help their child!
