Excellent article, but light on details. Would this blood product be acceptable for people of all blood types? Would there be harmful side effects of having plastic blood in the blood stream? Would the blood "cells" ever break down and be flushed out of the body? Sounds like it would take years of thorough testing before ever using it on humans.

The implications though are amazing. I mean, could it be used to fight leukemia or any form of blood poisoning? Flush the entire blood stream with it, then supplant the artificial blood with a fresh supply? Again, the article is a sign of amazing things to come. Thanks charbarred.

It's a very good idea! Perhaps one day we all would have artificial blood in our bodies

If this is artificial hemoglobin, it is already being use to treat severe head injuries where a small amount of blood can carry more 02 to the brain. It is also used for those who will not accept donated blood because of religious beliefs, I think they are also trying to use it in carbon monoxide posionings.

I don't like the sound of it. I sure hope they test it more thoroughly than they have many human health products that later turned out to be worse for you than the maladies they were intended to address.

Many years ago I studied di-oxygen complexes on chelated Cobalt compounds. In many ways these mimicked Vitamin B-12. Iron was much harder to work with; it has to be prevented from oxidizing from Fe 2 to Fe 3. It is good to see that such research has continued and perhaps borne fruit.
