May 12, 2007, 5:46 p.m.Thanks for this posting, jeremytoday.
I have been wanting to setup something for birds.
I have a hummingbird feeder on my front porch. Watching through the picture window the other day, a hummingbird and a big butterfly were both drinking from the feeder.

May 12, 2007, 9:46 p.m.Thanks, I was wondering how to keep my groundfeeding friends (all except the pigeons) safe from my kitten (he has already brought us three partialy live birds). The chicken wire idea should work fine.

May 12, 2007, 10:22 p.m.Great Post!!
Bird watching is a really great hobby, I also find it a great way to meditate, very close to nature. We have parrots outside and that provides a variety of food so we see all types of birds as well as squirrels.
It is important when you plant bushes/trees that bear fruit to try and alternate fruiting times.
This year we had a flock of Cedar Wax Wings take out the Mulberry crop, but it was fun watching them swoop in and out for the berries.
Interesting fact: if they eat to many of the berries it ferments in their crop and turns into alcohol. Then you have a bunch of drunk birds flying into windows and falling out of the trees.
When I was rehabbing I would get calls about disoriented bird flocks, upon questioning I would find out they had berry trees. People would be shocked to learn that the birds were drunk. Remedy for drunk birds, pick them all up, put them in a box, cover it and bring it in for the night, in the morning set the box out and release.
