May 13, 2007, 9 p.m.This disgusting disease broke out in Sichuan province last year and was successfully covered up. Not this time because Shenzhen and Hong Kong import pork from this area and their inspectors won't be blindsided by knuckledragging local bosses. Let's see, melamine, ethylene glycol poisoned medicine around the globe, #1 mercury, lead, organic chemical and CO2 polluter in the world and now this. What is the benefit of outsourcing to China?

May 13, 2007, 9:54 p.m.This problem is very serious.
One of the risks for a pandemia is the crowding of animals in a large scale of farming.
We have problems already in the US, in particular related with hog farms.
Beside the biological contamination, pollutants from large amount of feces and chemical degradation of the same are very critical.
There is not a simple solution to such problems.
All this require multinational efforts and cooperation.
One of the obstacles will be how to keep the politicians out of the equation, and be able to manage the efforts with a scientific and technical criteria.

May 14, 2007, 5:51 a.m.China is disgusting. I don't know why we would even import there food. They don't make food healthy enough for pets nevermind people and all the diseases (obviously not ALL but many) come from that overcrowded country. I have nothing against the Chinese, but there government is not up to par when it comes to food safety and inspection.

May 14, 2007, 7:13 a.m.The simple solution is not to buy anything made in China. It's hard to do nowdays but it can be done and if everyone did this the american companies would get the message. Wal-Mart would be out of business too unless they opted to insoruce from the american workers and businesses. Cheap China made products are not of any quality or usefull for any period of time. If we stopped buying the Made in China products it would also help with a reduction in waste and landfill space. That's where it all usually ends up after its short lifecycle.

May 14, 2007, 7:56 a.m.Boycotting Chinese goods is a way to protest, certainly, but much of what we buy (like pet food) contains ingredients or components produced in China that aren't labeled as such.

May 14, 2007, 11:04 a.m.Doesn't matter much, China plans on poisoning us all long before any Virus has time to get to us anyway and as for the dead pigs, don't worry about that either China already has a buyer. It should be on your stores shelves by next week.

May 14, 2007, 3:20 p.m.While this may sound a bit "far out", I sometimes wonder if these "flus" are not in fact some kind of wierd way of testing the effectivnes "biological weapons" for some kind of future conflict.
China has never signed an agreement not to use them.
Still if it's not one thing it's annother. I agree with a lot of you, I go out of my way not to buy chinese.

May 14, 2007, 4:59 p.m.K21bl, ontherock.
I cannot help but think you know little of China. I lived there and was ashamed, ashamed at the working and living conditions people there who worked for good ol' Western companies in compounds, crammed four to eight in a tiny room and paid a few dollars a day. At Western companies who kept demanding to prices be lowered to the point that the raw material and labor cost about the same as the selling price. And for what? So that our CEOs and stockholder can take in more. We can't pollute here anymore so we go and do it there.
China could produce quality goods and it does but we don't want to pay the price so it does not get here. Why are there so many things made in China, because OUR companies have moved there to exploit the people there and make more money. As for the government well every time it plugs one hole another opens up because someone has to cut corners just to meet the greed of the Western companies

May 14, 2007, 6:36 p.m.Dontknowmuch is completely right. Not only are companies going there to produce goods so we can buy goods at 'reasonable' prices, but when companies need to dispose of waste products the Chinese government allow the same Western governments to make dumps of tracts of Chinese lands. Who knows how long the continent of Asia will take repay the huge ecological hit it is taking for the West.
