May 14, 2007, 1:40 p.m.I am constantly leaving notes to people who lock their dogs in a car with the windows rolled up in the sun for "just a couple of minutes..."
They owners always try to get mad but in our town we had a human baby's brain fried to death, in a sealed car "just for a couple of minutes," 2 years ago.
(Plus they have NO IDEA how mad I AM when I see that...)

May 14, 2007, 3:22 p.m.Dogs who live outside on the end of a chain or in a pen often fall victim to heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Every year our organization gets reports of chained dogs dying in the heat, no water, no shade. To read more, have literature sent to homes with chained dogs, or find out how you can help, go to http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org

May 14, 2007, 7:50 p.m.People underestimate how hot it can get in a sealed car. It's like a greenhouse.
We leave our critters at home (a fenced yard with a lot of shady spots and a pet shelter they can duck into) with lots of water in the summer. Too hot to take them with us. Would rather see them happy to see us than find one croaked in the car.
If you do have to take one along, try to find a shady spot to park, leave the windows down a bit (the pooch will gaurd the car so dont worry about security, thats what the pooch is for)and leave a bowl of water (add an ice cube if you wish)on the floor of the car. Fido will thank you .

May 14, 2007, 8:01 p.m.i was at a ride-athon for MS one year & it was a mostly biker event. some idiot brought & left his dog in the car & it was really hot. the license was announced several times with instructions to get the dog out of the car. no one came & the dog was suffering. one of the bikers called the dog to one side of the car & another one smashed out the window to get the dog out. they took the dog out of range & proceeded to smash all the windows, windshield & rear window. they tied the dog to the bumper with a big bowl of water & a note to pay attention to the animal. i've never been so proud of a group of people in my life.
