There are now 9,789 breeding pairs of Bald Eagles in the lower 48 states, the agency said.

Minnesota tops the list with 1,312 pairs of the white-headed birds. Vermont saw its first baby eagles hatch in 2006.

"The eagles would continue to be managed under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act."

As well as they should! They are our National symbol, and it is our hope that future generations of Americans, can also take in at they're majestic grace, and beauty in the wild.

Teddy Roosevelt was right! We must always strive to improve our nation's conservation/wildlife throughout this land. They are part of our natural heritage.

      Thanx Stoners!

      Good Article!

Golden and bald eagles will always remain on the safe list since they are protected by other laws as part of our nation's heritage. Excellent story, Stoners.

I dont think that de-protecting them (if that is really a word) is the same as declaring open season...if we are going to have any consistancy in our game protection laws then they must be taken off the list. Either that or develop a new catagory for them.. I agree they are a beautiful bird..I ought to know I see literally hundreds of them every day.

The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act has been in place for a very long time and does as much to protect the birds as the Endangered Species Act.

I've only seen one in the Everglades. That would be the ideal habitat in that region for the eagle. I think they need more protection in the Everglades and Florida Keys at least.

As I stated I think the Protection Act that is in place now is adequate. As long as it is enforced...that is to say that there is no crime if there is no punishment

They should be delisted from endangered and threatened because they no longer fit into that protection act..they should remain protected under the Bald Eagle and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

I am overjoyed that the Bald Eagle is thriving, but I will not be satisfied until there are 20,000 breeding pairs. Until then, leave them on the list.

I say keep them protected and move to Montana and start shooting helicopter pilots. We have saveral pairs here in NH and Maine and lets get more of those majestic birds out there soaring along the seacoast.

They need to keep the Eagles on the list. In fact any species of Bird should be protected. With the threat of bird viruses, Global Whatever, I have noticed that a lot of Animal life is mingling around in the cities. Our wood lands are becoming scarce.

What would down grading the Eagle from EPA regulatory control mean? Could you then go out and shoot them without fear of arrest? It seems to me that a National Treasury should be protected for ever!
