An al-Qaida front group, the Islamic State in Iraq, claimed Sunday that it had captured U.S soldiers in a deadly attack on a U.S. convoy the day before in Sunni area south of Baghdad that is known as the triangle of death a longtime al-Qaida stronghold.

Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, said the military could not verify the claim by the Islamic State of Iraq but "it would not surprise me if ... al-Qaida in Iraq is involved in this because there are similarities to what they've done before."

Meanwhile, 4,000 U.S. troops backed by aircraft, intelligence units and Iraqi forces were scouring the farming area around Mahmoudiya and the nearby town of Youssifiyah for the third day, as the military promised to make every effort available to find the missing soldiers.

First and foremost, I hope and pray that our soldiers are found safe and unharmed quickly and that the savages that carried out this attack are also found, and brought to justice!

The most compelling part of the article is the manner in which the search for them is being carried out. Perhaps this is the way to actually WIN this entire war? Close down an entire area, search it 100%, provide security and food for the citizens, arrest those suspected of being or supporting terrorists, then move on to the next area. If that were done with respect to the citizens possessions and religion, giving something of value to those that help us, the tide may quickly turn in our favor.

I hope our captured soldiers are alive and well and are returned or rescued soon.

This is not like a conventional war where you can surrender and be captured and detained in a prisoner of war camp. You will most likely be tortured and then killed. With more targets afforded by the SURGE, this is going to become more frequent in the enemy's arsenal of hit and run tactics. This incident will place a rage in the hearts of many of our troops and make the possibility of lashing out at innocent Iraqis more possible. In some of the troops this will become a morale issue. And I see this as a tactic to further divide the pro and anti war camps here in America.

I do not see a good outcome, but I hope I am wrong.

The last two captured in the same town were castrated and burned alive.

These new detainees have been transferred to the resistance holding center run by the families of the people we tortured and killed in Abu Gharrib. where they win contests to see just how much pain can be inflicted on invaders.

I pray this is a lie but you know it's not.

Why are the troops in Iraq? it's not our country the more we stay the more we get to read about our troops being blown up or worse. and there is no end in sight and no victory possible.

It's an age old debate "troops out" is unpatriotic vs. "no, it's to save more of them from dieing for no good (like in Vietnam". Events like these are not fodder for pushing they fight. Hearing about "castrated and burned alive" is all the MORE reason to get out. This is an area of the world we should have started pulling our interests from a long time ago.

But hey, the Bush family is an oil family. 1/3 re-elected W. back in. An now we are paying this price.

If only we could find the leaders and hideouts of these craven ba*tards. I heard this morning that even the local tribal leaders - who would ordinarily support this organization, or at least ignore them - have turned against the "Islamic State of Iraq" group and is fighting against them. Is there no way we can find and kill them? How can they have such easy access to the internet and be completely untraceable? I'll wager that if I posted up photoshoped images of GWB in a set of lacy women's undergarments the FBI would be pounding on my door in half an hour. (Well, OK, maybe not - but they'd probably know who I am and WHERE I am) How can the Iraqi citizens have NO CLUE as to the identities and whereabouts of these murderous knuckleheads? They certainly aren't helping the people of Iraq - why aren't they being turned in?

If we stay in Iraq what will be the short term consequences?

                                        Likewise, the long term consequences?

Similiarly, if we leave Iraq, right now, what are the short and long term consequences?

Likewise, if we leave Iraq over a long period of time, agreed--not forced on--with the present government of Iraq what would be the short and long term consequences?

Which of these choices would be the most moral?

Which of these choices would lead friendly nations to trust us and nonfriendly nations to think twice?

I think the United States needs to just pull out and nuke the whole area. The people over there have no contribution to the world other than oil. They are a cancer in this world and are truly cowards. They have no respect for the laws of war, they kill innocent people, including children. They fight cowardly by using IED's and not confronting troops. They kill each other. They whine and complain over Abu Ghraib, which added up to be a college frat party initiation, but they can do what they want to US soldiers. And to top it off, the liberals don't pubicly outcry any of their insane acts, but only their own countrys minor acts. Use some common sense people. If the US wants to win this war, you're going to have to let the politically correct BS go and get back into the mindset of WW2 where winning was all that mattered. These people only understand fear. The US needs to stop playing around and being nice and give them that fear. Otherwise, being nice will be your countrys downfall.

The ability to make such massive sweeps is why we needed 400,000 troops the way Shinseki laid out. Massive sweeps like this, that then begin incorporating the locals who join us until we are 800,000 and then 1.2 million, etc. is one of the few ways of fighting a counter-insurgency operation and succeeding. Chiang Kai Shek's route of Mao and the Red Chinese is a classic example.

I which they could sweep the area clean...and continue across the entire country this way. It's probably too late to do it this way. Too little too late.

But I still pray they find the soldiers alive.
