Japan Urges More Missile Defense Study »

Japan and the U.S. need to boost technological research on intercepting high-flying missiles, such as a new ballistic missile reportedly developed by North Korea , Japan's defense minister said Tuesday.

    A South Korean news report last month said the North had displayed at a recent military parade a newly developed medium-range ballistic missile capable of reaching the U.S. territory of Guam.

    Kyuma would not confirm the existence of the North Korean missile, which reportedly can travel 1,500-2,500 miles. But he told a news conference that both Japan and the United States needed to study ways of countering the potential threat.
