May 15, 2007, 10:07 p.m.Mexican authorities are facing gunfire from increasingly well-armed traffickers and officials say the vast majority of the weapons are smuggled from the United States.
Assistant Secretary of Public Safety Patricio Patino made a fresh appeal Tuesday for U.S. authorities to cut off the supply.
"The firepower we are seeing here has to do with a lack of control on that side of the border," Patino said in an interview with The Associated Press. "What we have asked the American government ... is that they put clear controls on the shipments of weapons."

May 16, 2007, 11:18 a.m.ROTFLMAO. When Mexico stops sending us illegals we should consider helping them. They have some nerve to bring up any situation considering border control (aka weapons control on our side of the border) with the crap they cause for the U.S.

May 16, 2007, 12:02 p.m.Excuse me? Our current government has still not secured our own borders, nor our ports nor the safety of our border towns. Millions of Mexico's citizens are currently living illegally here in the USA, breaking our current laws! And Mexico wants what?
Our own Military National Guards don't even have weapons and are not allowed to confront these well armed traffickers. Our local border law enforcement has been asking for help for months and our own border patrol are not allow to use weapons to stop these same people.
The last two border patrol agents went to prison for trying to stop a drug dealer.
Mexico does not seem to understand another point, America does not have anymore money to spend!
The Mexican government can not have it both ways! All laws have to be enforce, not just a pick and choose!

May 16, 2007, 2:24 p.m.It is likely that the same people who run the drug cartels are those who lead smuggling of ilegal inmigrants from this side to the US. Drug cartels are a very well organized mafia and have a lot of ilegal "business" both here and within the US. The Mexico/US border will never be secure for either country unless those people are stopped. Unfortunately there's no apparent solution to the drug traffic problem. As long as there is someone who would buy the drug there allways be someone who produce and sell it.

May 16, 2007, 3:31 p.m.Has anyone check out the fact that Mexico has STRICT GUN CONTROL LAWS. Is the Mexican Government admitting that STRICT GUN CONTROL LAWS do not stop gun violence?

May 16, 2007, 4:22 p.m.I live in a Mexican border town, and the area is rapidly being taken over by a group call the Zetas. They have everything from 40mm grenade launcher, 50 cal., grenades, bazookas, etc. not just the ak47 anymore. They also use official vehicles. We have a saying here to keep alive, The guy with the machine gun is the boss, period. And its getting worse. I wouldn't blame it on guns from the US though. The criminal choose to purchase them wherever and bring them into Mexico to kill people. Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

May 16, 2007, 10:20 p.m.I bet a good solid wall along the border would solve their smuggling problem, woundn't it be nice if someone would suggest it or better yet build it.Ooops forgot the Mexicans think a wall that stops illegal smuggling is tantamount to the Berlin Wall that stopped millions of people from escaping the socialist state of East Germany.
